APRIL 4th MEETING

Our April meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 4th at 7pm at the North Domingo Baca Mutigenerational Center at 7600 Carmel NE.  Our speaker this month is Montie Avery. Join us for a trip through the history of Las Vegas, New Mexico.  The Meadow City was the first city to be reached by the ATSF Railroad.  It was the largest city in New Mexico for a time and was considered to become New Mexico’s Capitol. Walk with me through Las Vegas and absorb their rich history, architecture, and learn of the characters who made Las Vegas what it is today.

You will learn;  When was Las Vegas in Absaroka County, whose blue 1965 Ford Econoline Pickup can be seen in the movie Easy Rider, what factory in Las Vegas contributed to the safety of WWII pilots, what was Momma Lucy’s Gang,  what roof did Kearney stand on to declare New Mexico was a part of the US, who was hanged at the Bridge Street/Gallinas Creek bridge, why was the Plaza Hotel renamed Hotel Romine, why is there a Rough Rider Museum, and what famous Western Cowboy actor lived in one of Las Vegas’ 2 story rock houses???????

As usual, we will have a fun raffle and refreshments provided by Joe Baird.

April 8th Breakfast

Breakfast will be Saturday the 8th at 8:30 am at The Owl Café at 800 Eubank Blvd. NE. Enjoy time with your friends at fellow club members at this iconic institution and partake of a delicious breakfast.

President’s Message for April 2023                                                        Chris Joiner

Welcome to another month. The year is flying by. Welcome to spring. I hope we will have some warm days that are not too hot. I am excited for the months to come because of all the events and speakers we have lined up. We are still putting the final touches together for the Las Cruces trip in June. I would like to thank George and Jackie for offering to help Amy and me put together a fantastic tour. We are also brainstorming for a fall tour to see the leaves change. That trip will probably be to Taos and the Enchanted Circle, which includes Angel Fire, Eagles Nest, and Red River. Any time we get to drive our cars is a great time. Also, please feel free to make suggestions for short day tours that we can do in collaboration with the Saturday breakfast. I hope everyone has a great month.

Minutes of the March 7th Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Chris. There were 13 members in attendance and one guest…our speaker Don Vigil. Chris welcomed all and made sure everyone had received the newsletter. Treasurer Amy reported that the only exciting thing in the last month is we paid for a memorial brick in memory of Lou Gorenz. Amy mentioned that we are still collecting dues and are only missing them from a few people.  Chris offered several birthday greetings. There were no anniversaries. Thanks to Joe Warren for providing refreshments this evening. The refreshment signup sheet was then passed around. There were no corrections or additions to the February meeting minutes. Chris announced that donations for the raffle are always welcome. Roger said he is looking for old New Mexico license plates to cut out the Zia and put on the black Route 66 plates. Tonight’s donations included a Mustang pillow, a license plate Roger made, some books from Joe Abbin and some jelly George made. When old business was mentioned, Joe Abbin brought up an article in a magazine, about Frank Corey.  Joe Warren gave an update on Max Glover. He has been in the hospital but is home today.  Joe Abbin announced the passing of Roger Campbell, a former member. Joe and Chris told fond stories about Roger. Chris mentioned that this month’s breakfast will be 3/11 at Hello Deli on Jefferson. There will be no outing afterwards. Chris also announced that our next club meeting will be on April 7th, 7pm at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center. Montie Avery will have a presentation for us that evening. Chris said that the April breakfast will be on Saturday the 8th and asked for suggestions. There were a few suggestions but it was decided that we would just pick a place and email everyone as it gets closer. We were tentatively going to visit East Mesa Auto Electric after breakfast that day, but Joe Abbin said that would probably not be able to happen. Chris talked about the trip to Las Cruces and the Globo Rojo Museum in June and announced that the hotel information was sent out in an email and is included in the newsletter. Joe provided a crime report, which was about the high crime and empty jail. As far as new business, Joyce mentioned several dates of upcoming car shows and cruises. Joe Abbin mentioned that the Good Guys car show in Scottsdale is later this month. He thinks that the V8 club should have a table there. Bob Payne brought in an old (1953) brittle Ford calendar that was specially made for Ford’s 50th anniversary. Joe Abbin also shared a couple of items. We had refreshments and the raffle. Don Vigil gave a very informative presentation about how he acquired Starters and Generators of New Mexico and what all they do there. It was quite interesting.
