May 3rd CLUB MEETING

We will be meeting at 7pm on Tuesday May 3rd, at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center at 7600 Carmel NE.  Our program will be presented by Montie Avery, whose information follows.

Montie W. Avery has lived in New Mexico for most of the past 60 years after growing up in the far North West of Missouri and going to college in Dallas.  While at Dallas Christian College he met and married an Albuquerque native, Billie Kelsoe.

Growing up in a rural farming community which was miles and miles from any real adventure he developed a passion for travel, history, photography, reading, and writing.  After 50+ years in the Insurance Industry, most as an Investigator, he retired in 2015. Retirement provided additional hours of leisure time that could be filled with avocations such as joining multiple historical societies, characterizations of historical individuals, traveling (10 trips to Europe), photographing of churches for an annual Christmas card, historical interruption at Rancho de las Golondrinas, and during Covid the opportunity to “attend” multiple Zoom lectures.

A book entitled THE COLORFUL COWBOY as seen through a Kaleidoscope will soon be available on Amazon.

When Covid forced us to spend more time at home he began to write an Email Blog which went out to 50-60 friends at least once a week.  The blog went thru several renditions before arriving at its present series which is entitled “Forgotten New Mexico Tales”.

With over 50 “Forgotten New Mexico Tales” to choose from you might hear him expound on such topics as: Was there a 47-star flag, Where is Blackdom, NM, Who is Vincenti de Silva, Gallup’s Coal Union War, Where is Bloodville, NM, Did Elfigo Baca live in Albuquerque, and did Poncho visit Columbus?

MUSEUM CAR SHOW

Sunday, May 15th, will be the Car Show at the Albuquerque Museum, 2000 Mountain Rd NW @ 19th Street. Doors open at 8 am.  Please see the flyer later in this newsletter for more details.

President’s Message for May 2022                              Chris Joiner

Time has sure flown since our last meeting. Thank you, Joe, for a very interesting and informative presentation on Crime and Crime Prevention. Amy and I were disappointed that we were unable to join the group for the drive to Madrid. I have been working 7 days a week, and Amy has been working 6 days a week plus is taking a class for grad school. We hear that there was a great turn out for the drive, including several members of the Model A club. We have several exciting events coming up soon, including the Museum car show on May 15th and the club birthday party on Memorial Day. It is so nice that we are all becoming more active now that maybe the pandemic is a thing of the past. We are hoping that our schedules let up a little and that we can join in some events very soon. Regardless, the weather is nice so it is a perfect time to get out and enjoy.

Minutes of the April 5th, 2022 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Chris Joiner.  There were 21 present including Larry Whaley and new members Nick and Diana Bakas.  From the police department; Brian McCutcheon and Paul Pacheko were in attendance.

Treasurer Amy reported that we are doing well financially.  Happy Birthday greetings went out to Phil Lovato, Gene Dierschke, Joe Abbin, Lou Gorenz, Lorna Azevedo, Johanne Glover, Nancy Agnew, Bob Agnew, and Gus Van de Velde.  Anniversary greetings were extended to Lou and Mary Gorenz, Richard and Barbara Polk and George and Jackie Abernathy. Thanks to Max and Johanne Glover for providing refreshments.  The For Sale/Wanted ads were passed around as was the refreshment signups.

Old Business:  There were no corrections to last month’s meeting minutes.  Joyce reported many activities going on through the NM Council of Car Clubs.  The Museum Car Show is on May 15 with a theme of convertibles.  There will be an all club picnic at Oak Flats in August, Collector Car Appreciation Day on July 9th, and the Swap Meet in September is still searching for a new location.

Jeff reported that the tour of Frank Brown’s garages was well attended and housed a great collection of interesting cars.  Joyce read a thank you from Frank and Andi Brown to the club.

The program tonight will be by Joe Abbin on Crime & Crime Prevention.

Jeff made a motion that we establish a lifetime membership with the criteria being 85 years of age and having been a member for at least 10 years.  Beth seconded the motion and the motion carried by a show of hands of the membership present.

New Business:  April’s tour will be Saturday, April 9th to Madrid.  The meeting place will be Smith’s on Tramway at Central at 9:30am.  There will be time for shopping and lunch in Madrid.

Sunday, May 15th is the car show at the Albuquerque Museum.  Gates open at 8am.

Joe will be planning the Club Birthday Party on Memorial Day.  Details will follow.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 7th at 7pm at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center.  The program will be on NM history by Montie Avery.

Max told us he received a call from Laguna Nigel, California about his Mercury.

Refreshments were enjoyed and Joe Abbin regaled us with information about the update of his book ABQ Blues and how crime is still running rampant in Albuquerque. Paul Pacheko, who is running for Bernalillo County Sheriff, also added his thoughts to the program.  The meeting ended with a great raffle.

Early Ford V-8 Club Tumbleweed Members

A long-time friend and fellow Ford lover as well as a retired employee,

sent me a copy of the Early Ford V-8 Foundation Newsletter which noted

a memorial contribution made by the Tumbleweed Chapter in Tom

Patterson’s name.

My family and I would like to express our appreciation and thanks to all

of you for this honor.  As a 1951 Graduate of Henry Ford Trade School

And River Rouge Plant Tool and Die employee, I know that Tom would

be very pleased to know that his name continues in the history of appreciation

for “old Fords” and the history of Ford Motor Company.

Thank you,

They are the parents of Fred, Don, Maura, Debbie, Alan and Gail.  The family includes 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and a great grandchild arriving in July.

THE DEARBORN AND BOTSFORD INNS

The Dearborn Inn in Dearborn, Michigan, was conceived by Edsel and Henry Ford in the early 1930’s to welcome travelers flying into the Ford Airport, located adjacent to the Inn. Within several years of the inn’s opening in 1931, the airport closed, as Ford got out of the aviation business. The inn prospered as a first-class hotel, dining room and tavern. The building was designed by Detroit architect, Albert Kahn, as an 18th- or early 19th-century inn, and featured the best accommodations of the 1930’s. The inn still exists, operated by Marriott, and the dining room and tavern are still open. The property is a designated historic site, and well worth a visit.

The Botsford Inn is not so well known, but it was also a part of Henry Ford’s life. The inn was built as a home in 1836 by Orrin Weston and converted into a tavern by Stephen Jennings in 1841. Milton Botsford bought what was then called the Sixteen Mile House in 1860, and renamed it the Botsford Tavern. It was a stagecoach stop, popular with drovers, farmers and travelers on the Grand River plank road. Henry Ford, who in the 1880’s attended dances at the inn with his future wife Clara, bought it in 1924. He moved the building back on the property, which was in danger of being destroyed for a road widening project. Henry renovated the inn to reflect the Victorian era. He first used it as a private retreat. Later he turned it into a restaurant, which operated until 1951. The Anhut family then bought the property, operating it as one of the state's oldest inns until 1999. Around 1960, new wings were added to the building. Botsford Hospital bought the property. The hospital removed the newer wings and preserved the historic parts of the building. The exterior reflects its Ford-era appearance, and it is designated as a historic property. It is a part of the Botsford Hospital Complex in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

SEPTEMBER COUNCIL SWAP MEET

Ron & Su Rymarz have been diligently seeking a place to have a September swap meet sponsored by the Car Council. They have located a new location in the Los Lunas area. The owner of the property is very willing to allow us to use the area. The only caveat is that VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! Ron and Su will continue with the plan, provided that enough volunteers step up now. In order to use the area, about 50 volunteers will be needed, each to put in 3 hours or so each. No one will have to be on duty for every day of the meet, but volunteers will be needed mostly on Thursday, September 22 to measure and mark spaces and put up signs, on Friday afternoon to help register vendors, direct traffic and park vendors; and on Saturday morning early to direct traffic and park vendors. Equipment and supplies will be provided, but man and woman power is needed. Other smaller jobs will require help throughout the meet. If you are willing to put in some time on one of the jobs, please e-mail rryma5@aol.com, the sooner, the better. Plans will proceed as soon as enough people volunteer to help. Otherwise, no swap meet.
