President’s Message for June 2022                              Chris Joiner

I’m not sure how we are almost to June, but as long as we are having fun, that’s all that matters. I hope everyone has been able to enjoy some good weather lately…..well, when it’s not windy.  I wasn’t sure what my schedule would be like for the museum car show so I didn’t plan on showing a car.  However, Amy and I were able to meet for breakfast that morning and then we walked around the show.  I was impressed with the turn out, which was encouraging after two years without it.  I know many of you are looking forward to the club birthday party on Memorial Day.  Amy and I will be out of town, but I trust Joe will not disappoint with his arrangements for the party.  We look forward to hearing all about it.  I also hope the wind cooperates for an enjoyable picnic.

Minutes of the May 3rd, 2022 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Chris Joiner.  There were 20 present which included our speaker for the evening, Montie Avery and his wife Billie.  Treasurer Amy reported that she had filed the annual report for the club.  Happy Birthday wishes were extended to Bob Napier and Betty Leupold.  Thanks to Clements for providing the refreshments.

Jeff reported that 5 club members went on the Madrid tour and many more of the Model A’s joined us. Chris said the Model A Club has a very active group that likes to get out and go places.

Joyce, reporting for the New Mexico Council of Car Clubs, said the May 15th Car Show at the Albuquerque Museum will cost $10 to register.  The theme car, convertibles, will be parked on the first several rows, and there will be dash plaques for participants but no prizes awarded this year.  Gates open at 7:30am.  Volunteers are needed to help with parking.  There will be a Tractor Show in Corrales on May 7th and a swap meet at the Albuquerque Dragway on May 14th & 15th.  The September Swap Meet will be held in a new location in Los Lunas only if enough volunteers come forward.  Volunteers are needed September 22 to help mark the field and everyday at the swap meet to help with parking. Please email rryma5@aol.com if you are able to help.

The next club meeting will be June 7th at the same location and we are looking for ideas for the program.  Joe suggested contacting Skinners Carburetors and Jeff volunteered to follow up.  Joyce volunteered to do a history of the club sometime and has slides of early car shows she could share.

Joe declined to make a full crime report but said crime is still increasing in Albuquerque.  He showed a book he is presently reading called “We Own This City” about Baltimore that has many parallels to the Albuquerque situation. There was no more business and no show and tell items.  Refreshments were enjoyed and the raffle was held.  Thanks to Betty Leupold’s donations of models and Ford memoralbia, the raffles have been quite popular. George’s jams are also very sought after.

Our speaker Montie Avery regaled us with a fascinating look at Bud Rice, who established Budville west of Albuquerque.  Bud Rice was murdered in 1967 and no one has been charged with his murder.  Thanks for that interesting tale and the other tidbits of New Mexico history you shared, Montie.

MUSEUM CAR SHOW

It turned out to be a wonderful show. We had over 300 vehicles registered, everything from Model T Fords to late-model Mustangs, Camaros and Corvettes, to vintage motorcycles from the teens to the 1940’s, to a classic Hupmobile and an Auburn. Several clubs had very nice arrays of their group’s cars. The Model Car Club and the Auto Artists went all out and had large displays inside the Museum. Bob Payne brought his bright red 1953 Ford convertible to display in the front row, amongst a host of other nice vintage convertibles. Philip Lovato was present with several of his fine cars and Jim and Joyce Clements had their dandy Lincoln on display. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood and having a great time. It was so nice to be out with our cars and friends again. The Museum really appreciated having us all there showing off our hobby cars and thanked us profusely for showing up. It’s really great that this show is back; it’s the best one in town. And the Museum loves it.

Safety First – What Causes Garage Door Related Injuries

From Overhead Door Company

Playing With Garage Doors

Child injuries occur with garage doors, whether riding them or racing in and out as the door closes as a way to have fun.

To prevent this, it’s simply a matter of making sure that you are educating any children in the house that garage doors are not toys.

Trying to Get Into the Garage Before It Closes

Over 130 people ever year are hurt, or damage the door, when they try to race under as it is closing. Modern garage doors with working sensors should prevent impacts; however, it’s still a risky move.

The best way to avoid injury here is to never race the door. If you’re racing to exit your garage as the door is closing, try using an alternate route such as a smaller entry door instead.

System Entrapments

Fingers can get caught between the rollers and the tracks if you’re not careful. This accident happens to nearly 200 people every year, and in certain cases can lead to severe injury and even amputation.

Stay clear of the door when it is in motion.

Broken Doors

Faulty garage doors that simply aren’t working properly contributes to over 200 injuries per year. There are many reasons for a broken garage door, such as malfunctioning sensor or problems with the garage door opener.

To be sure that you’re not surprised by a broken garage door and possibly injured as a result, it’s a good idea to test all mechanical and moving parts during regular annual maintenance.

Springs

Every year, more than 300 people suffer injuries from broken garage door springs or by getting their hands stuck while performing maintenance on them.

The best thing you can do to avoid spring-related injuries is to simply keep your hands away from these areas. Avoid DIY repair and call us for 24/7 repair service.

Glass

If your garage door has windows, or is a contemporary glass-based design then at some point you may have to deal with broken glass. Each year, this causes more than 300 injuries.

If you do have an unfortunate glass breakage, pay attention in the clean-up. Be sure to clear up the broken glass as soon as possible and don’t leave any shards around that may cause injuries in the future.

Sharp Edges

More than 800 people each year cut themselves on the garage door’s track or other sharp edges. Most injuries can be minor but, if the metal has rusted or is dirty, there is risk of an infection.

To prevent any cuts, stay clear of the system and call the experts in.

Do It Yourselfers

Unfortunately, there are more than 1,600 DIY related injuries per year. Some of us prefer to work on our own garage doors rather than seek professional help. While this can be an affordable option for quick maintenance and repairs, there’s always the chance of injury if you’re not familiar with the specifics of your door and spring system.

Falling Doors or Sections

If garage door issues are ignored, there’s the chance that a section, or the entire door itself can fall and cause serious harm. Each year, this occurs over 2,000 times and it can do damage to people and cars.

Annual maintenance is the best way to prevent garage door malfunctions on this scale. When performing your annual tune-up, we will be sure that all bolts are tightened and hinges are in perfect working condition.

Pinches and Crushes

One of the most common types of injury is pinching and crushing caused by the garage door’s section joints. In fact, this happens over 7,000 times per year.

To avoid this type of injury, always be careful to avoid placing your hands near any joints because you never know if you’ll be unlucky and get pinched.

SEPTEMBER COUNCIL SWAP MEET

We still need a few more volunteers to help at the September Swap Meet. If you can put in 2 or 3 hours on September 22, 23, 24 or 25, it will be greatly appreciated. Contact joyce@nmcarcouncil.com if you can.
