SEPTEMBER MEETING

We will meet again this month on September 7 at the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center, classroom 7, at 7600 Carmel NE, just one-half block North and West of Paseo Del Norte and Wyoming. Parking is well-lit. This is a fine facility and quite accessible. We will decide on a permanent place to meet during this meeting. Masks will be required. The subject will be “The 1936 Fords” and will feature an original Ford promotional movie/video, followed by discussion of these iconic 80 year-old vehicles. Bring literature, models, memorabilia, etc.

As always suggestions for future speakers, meeting places and activities are welcome.

Betty Leupold has very generously donated some models and other memorabilia to use for our club raffles.  At this meeting there will be 2 models; a ’49 Ford tudor convertible by Franklin Mint and a National Motor Museum Mini 1926 Ford plus a Ford emblem Bolo tie.

STATE FAIR CAR SHOW

V8 Day at the New Mexico State Fair will take place on Sunday, September 12th.  Please gather at the parking lot at Central and Alcazar (1 block East of Louisiana) by 7:45 am so we can drive in to the fairgrounds together starting at 8 am.  There will be no charge for those entering with the club, however all persons who are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine must provide proof of being fully vaccinated to the State Fair unless qualified for an exemption.  We will drive in according to year of the car driven and will try to eat breakfast together after getting set up.

President’s Message for September 2021                                      Joe Abbin

In August, we had three great activities. We had our breakfast at the Range Cafe on Coors on the 14th. Next, on the 25th, we had Larry and Lorna Azevedo’s Luau at their compound in Corrales. Good food and island dancing. Thank you, Larry and Lorna!

The last activity was an open house shop tour at my shop and others on the 25th as part of the Route 66 Street Rod Nationals. Several of our club cars were there, including five in a display of the “world’s largest gathering of Roadrunner blown flatheads”. Our four cars were joined by Steve Andrews’ 1939 blown Tudor.

Minutes of the V8 Club Meeting – August 3, 2021

                                                         Secretary, Beth Jackson

President Joe Abbin called the meeting to order.  Sixteen members were present.  Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged.  Everyone present agreed that the new location was nice and more centrally located.  Breakfast out was agreed to be a good activity but the location for the August 14th breakfast was changed to The Range Café on Coors near Cottonwood Mall.

Larry Icerman’s garage tour was agreed to be great.  Larry was asked about the Santa Fe Concourse and he explained that it was hard to get help to organize so it was not being held.

The New Mexico Car Council All Club’s Picnic is being held this coming Saturday, August 7th.  There will be a board meeting at Joe’s shop on Tuesday, August 17th at 7pm.  The National Street Rod Association has asked Joe to be one of the destinations for their “shop tours” on Wednesday, August 25th.  Joe will provide coffee and donuts.  He is planning an exhibit of supercharged flatheads and asked Jeff to bring his ’46.  Joe asked for a volunteer to man a table with club information on it and Larry Bost agreed to take on that task.

The State Fair Car Show for our club will be on Sunday, September 12th.  Chris Joiner will head that with Jeff’s assistance.

Joe had several copies of Art Sena’s new book, New Mexico Car Clubs, on sale for $20.  It covers car clubs statewide from 1948-1979.

Max brought the owner’s manual for a ’50 Ford, a very small booklet.

After a short break for refreshments and conversation, the raffle was held and then a video was shown on judging cars.

Abbin Family 1936 Ford in 1950

This was our family car about 1952. I am on the right and my brother Tom is on the left. The car had been a wedding gift to my mom and dad in 1936. By 1954 it was really worn out and was on its third engine with 78,000 miles. Much to my dismay my mom sold it to the guys at the corner Chevron station for $25. Before I could buy it back it was partially cut up by the buyers and then destroyed in the jalopy races the following weekend. Ford called this car a touring Tudor. Others called it a “humpback” sedan because of the protruding trunk.

WAR-TIME FASHIONS

During World War II, the government set regulations for clothing manufacturers about types and amounts of fabrics that could be used in garments. Men’s double-breasted suits, vests, cuffs and pleats in pants were banned. No cuffs on blouses or shirts, no wider than 2” hems, only one patch pocket allowed, no skirts more than 72” around, no belts wider than 2”, no attached shawls or hoods, etc. There were no regulations regarding buttons and other trims; thus hats, purses, gloves and other accessories went wild, creating the distinct fashions of the 1940’s. A small paperback book from 1943, Vogue’s Pocket Book of Home Dressmaking contains basic sewing directions for making outfits within government guidelines. A chapter, “Renovate and Remake”, deals with remaking old garments into more modern ones. Using evening dress lower skirts or peplums for sleeves was one recommendation. Removing sleeves and collars to make jumpers was another trick. See below.

Minutes of the August 17th Board Meeting

The following officers and directors were present:  Joe Abbin, Jeff and Beth Jackson, Chris & Amy Joiner, Larry Bost and Roger Wilbur.  Joe’s open house on Wednesday the 25th for the Street Rod Nationals will be from 10-11 with several supercharged flatheads on display.  Jeff was requested to send photos of his ’46 for Joe’s use.  Larry will man a table with club information and membership forms.

Chris suggested a tour to the tunnels, halfway to Jemez Springs with lunch in Jemez Springs.  A date of October 16th was chosen and Chris and Amy will plan.

The State Fair Car Show is on Sunday September 12th for our club.  Chris and Jeff will coordinate.  The stanchions and sign are at Joe’s shop and will need to be transported.  Larry will set up the table for club recruitment.  We will have a vote by exhibitors for awards for our cars.

Topics for club meetings were requested and several were mentioned:  1936 Fords; a round robin on the topic of “What was your first Flathead and what happened to it”; round robin on pets; talks on member’s careers; how did you meet your spouse; polishes, what do pros use for show cars; detailing your car.  Members present selected the topic of “1936 Fords” for the September meeting.  Joe has a video that can be shown on the subject.  The October meeting will have a presentation on detailing with Roger and Joe coordinating.  The November meeting topic will be “Career Highlights” with Jeff coordinating.  The Christmas party will be discussed later.

Chris will coordinate “Westside Garage Tours” on Saturday, November 13th which will include breakfast or lunch.

Joe proposed the board award the “Dick Precit Award” at the state fair, but it was decided to do that only if at least 12 cars are present.

The meeting was adjourned.

Jokes of the Month

When my wife and I arrived at a car dealership to pick up our car after a service, we were told the keys had been locked in it.  We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door.  As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked.  “Hey,” I announced to the technician, “it’s open!”  His reply, “I know, I already did that side.”

We had to have the garage door repaired.  The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a ‘large’ enough motor on the opener.  I thought for a moment and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a ½ horsepower.  He shook his head and said, “You need a ¼ horsepower.”  I responded that ½ was larger than ¼ and he said, “NOOOO, it’s not.  Four is larger than two.”  We haven’t used that repairman since.

A young man goes up to an attractive girl in the college library.  He leans in and whispers, “Do you mind if I sit next to you?”  She loudly proclaims, “NO, I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH YOU!!!!”  All of the students in the library stared at the guy as he went to sit at another table.  He was very embarrassed.  A bit later she walked by.  She quietly told him, “I am a Psych major and I know what you were thinking, and now I know you are embarrassed.”  The guy responded in a very loud voice, “$200 FOR ONE NIGHT!! THAT IS TOO MUCH!!”  All the people in the library looked at the girl in shock.  The guy leans over and tells the girl, “I study law.  I know how to make people look guilty.”  Pick a winner here.

I bought this car in 2015 for $1500 at one of our local swap meets as a parts car for my three window coupe below. It yielded almost nothing I needed except the grill and the hood side stainless pieces. I resold for $1500. It did not have the protruding trunk and was called a “slant back” Fordor (not four door). Current location is unknown.

This is a sneak picture of my 1936 three window coupe. Ford also made a five window version (go figure). This project has been stalled for three years due to glitches in the engine development. The plan is for this car to be the world’s fastest flathead powered street rod!
