AUGUST MEETING

We will meet at a new place this month in our quest to find the most comfortable and convenient meeting place. The meeting will be held August 3, 7pm, at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center, classroom 7, at 7600 Carmel NE, just one-half block North and West of Paseo Del Norte and Wyoming. Parking is well-lit. This is a fine facility and quite accessible. We may decide on a permanent place to meet after this meeting.

Our speakers for August will be the Clements on the topic of “Judging: Like Henry Made Them”. The presentation will include a video on the subject, produced by the national Early Ford V-8 Club of America. The Clements have all been national judges. Even if you aren’t planning on entering your V-8 at a national club meet, I think you will find the material interesting and helpful.

Betty Leupold has very generously donated some models and other memorabilia to use for our club raffles.  At this meeting there will be a Ford belt buckle, an interesting pin with a pickup labeled Joiner Construction, and model of a Ford Ranger pickup.

Breakfast Group

For breakfast this month we will meet again at Hello Deli near the Journal Center on Jefferson on Saturday, August 14, at 8:30 am.  Good food, fair prices and very nice indoor and patio dining.  The Burrito Bandit will also be on site!

President’s Message for August 2021                                      Joe Abbin

In July, we had two great activities. First, we had the 4th of July picnic at Larry and Lorna Azevedo’s compound in Corrales. Good food and lots of Model A’s and T’s. Joiners and Abbin brought their V-8’s. Next, we toured member Larry Icerman’s garages in Santa Fe on the 17th. Wow! Pictures from that event are elsewhere in this newsletter. Thank you Larry and Larry & Lorna!

Minutes of the V8 Club Meeting – July 6, 2021

                                                         Secretary, Beth Jackson

President Joe Abbin called the meeting to order.  Fifteen people were present.  Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged.

Joyce, reporting for the NM Council of Car Clubs, says there are a lot of activities taking place and they are trying to get all listed on the council website. This coming weekend the council is doing an ice cream social on Friday night (July 9) at 7:30pm at El Vado for the NM Motor Tour.  On Saturday the 10th, a group will be meeting at Smith’s at Central and Tramway at 9:30.  They will leave at 10am heading down S14 to the Ice Cream place for lunch.  The All Clubs Picnic will take place on Saturday, August 7, in the Anaya’s front yard at Galisteo.  Bring your own lunch.  (See the flyer elsewhere in this newsletter.)  Joyce was elected to a board position on the car council.

Larry Icerman, a new member, invited the club to Santa Fe on July 17th to tour his 3 garages and cars, including some new ones.  We will go to breakfast at 8:30am and then head to Santa Fe.

Joe attended a Zoom meeting with 38 Presidents of Regional Clubs.  The new editor of the V8 Times, Shannon Olson, was introduced.  The National Club is offering $10,000 seed money to any regional group that will agree to host a National Meet.  The Grand National Meet is scheduled for June 2023.  The National Club has 7062 paid members and is still encouraging local members to join the National Club.  Lou Mraz of Colorado is planning a driving tour in the Fall of 2022 for southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.

Bruce Miller encouraged our members to join the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America’s Fall Tour of Northern New Mexico.  Details are found later in this newsletter.

The National Street Rod Association is holding the Route 66 Nationals at the NM State Fairgrounds on August 26-28.  Joe explained that this is an outstanding event and members should consider entering their cars and if not to simply attend.

Treasurer George reported that our club’s registration with the state has been updated.

Joe Abbin showed the license plate he made for his Cushman after he had trouble finding the correct old plate for it.  Will Clements told how their ’48 Mercury had clutch chatter and they finally traced it down to the wrong rear motor mount.  He brought the parts to show the difference.

It was also reported that Jay Hertz’s daughter Abby will be selling many of his cars soon.

The meeting was finished with an interesting presentation on Classic Car Insurance by Mark Krueger, a Farm Bureau agent.  He reminded us to make sure the agreed upon value is enough to cover a loss and to check our umbrella policy to make sure it extends coverage if your car is with a different carrier.  Thanks to Mark for an informative talk.

Do You Own a Classic?                                                              Joe Abbin

Just what is a classic anyway? There are lots of definitions here depending on who you ask. The Classic Car Club of America has the most definitive list of their idea of classics by year and brand. Many are “distinctive” Packards and Cadillacs built between 1915 and 1948. The Specialty Equipment Manufacturer’s Association (SEMA) defines classics as any car or truck built before 1990.

Car and Driver provided the definition I like: any vehicle that impressed you in high school or college! Those are the most popular at auctions, shows, museums, cruise-ins, etc. They are the ones being bought by the current group of middle-aged buyers who can finally afford what they wanted in their day. This is obviously a fluid group. Nostalgia is a moving target!

I get a magazine called simply “The Shop”. They conducted a poll of these new “classic” car owners as to their vision for their classic. 29% wanted to restore their classic to original condition and configuration, 26% wanted to update drive train and other features but keep mostly original appearance (resto-mod), and 7% wanted to more drastically hot rod or customize their vehicle. The most substantial group, 37% just wanted a reliable driver!

What is your classic and what is your vision for it?

ROUTE 66 AND NINE MILE HILL

After World War II ended, many GIs took to the road, some to see new parts of the country they had defended, and some to move their families to a new location. Many had been stationed at western bases during the War, and wanted to return to the area.

Going west from Albuquerque, cars had to climb "Nine Mile Hill" on Route 66. It was a steep, slow climb for most cars, and some older models didn't make it to the top without assistance. Here, the new pavement hasn't even been striped, but traffic is lined up behind a slow tow car (a new Ford V8).

Albuquerque west of the Rio Grande was acres and acres of empty mesa at the time. All that empty land to the east was soon to be developed and filled with houses for returning military families. Sandia Corporation and Kirtland Air Force Base would draw people to New Mexico to work on defense projects. The climate and wide-open spaces appealed to many.

Route 66 was only two lanes wide up into the 1950s, but it was the best way to go west, all the way to California.
