JUNE CLUB MEETING

The Return of the 2926 Locomotive

This month we are honored to have John Taylor give us the history of AT&SF steam locomotive number 2926. The 2926 was built in 1944, ran for the Santa Fe railroad from 1944-1955, was donated to the city of Albuquerque in 1956, and sat in Coronado Park for 44 years.  The New Mexico Heritage Rail Group pulled it out of the park in 2000 and has been restoring it to operating order since then. The giant locomotive ran for the first time on steam in the summer of 2021 and made a short journey for the first time in 67 years on May 6 of this year.  John will describe its storied history and discuss its future.

John M. Taylor has a master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Stanford University and was a member of Sandia's Technical and Management Staff from 1975 to 2010. He is the author or co-author of many publications including 24 books on a variety of subjects mostly associated with New Mexico. Eight of these books have won New Mexico-Arizona and/or Historical Society of New Mexico book awards.

This should be an excellent presentation. Come on down and bring your friends! The meeting will be held at 7pm, Tuesday, June 6, at North Domingo Baca Mutigenerational Center.

CLUB BREAKFAST

Saturday, June 10th, 8:30am at Hello Deli, 7600 Jefferson St NE we will be meeting for breakfast and conversation.  Tell your friends and meet there.

President’s Message for June 2023                                             Chris Joiner

We are right in the thick of a busy time for our club. There are still lots of fun events happening. I know everyone is busy, please join us whenever your schedule allows. The more people at an event or a get together, the merrier. There were four of us from this club who made it to the joint breakfast with the Model A club. I had hoped for more but am thankful for the four. On another note, I just heard about the Unser Museum moving to Nebraska. I am glad we had the opportunity to visit that museum a few months back. We are getting close to a group from our club going to see the Globo Rojo Museum in Las Cruces. This will be my third time seeing it, but I’m still really looking forward to it.

Minutes of the May 2nd Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Chris. There were seventeen members in attendance plus three guests; our speaker – Melissa Drake, her husband – Sam Drake, and Chris Stubblefield, who had flyers promoting a car show and music at North Domingo Baca Center the first Thursday of every month from May-October in the amphitheater. We had two new members present who introduced themselves. Martin Garcia met Joe Baird at a car show recently. He has a 1940 Ford Coupe Deluxe. Liz Johnson recently got a 1937 Ford 5 Window Coupe. She is eager to learn about flatheads and is available to tutor math and chemistry. Chris welcomed all and made sure everyone had received the newsletter. Treasurer Amy reported that nothing had happened since the last meeting, and that the checking account balance is $5262.37 and savings account balance is $1397.51. Chris offered birthday greetings. There were no anniversaries this month. Thanks to Joe and Larry & Pat Bost for providing refreshments. There were lots of yummy food and drinks. There were no corrections or additions to the April meeting minutes. Chris announced that donations for the raffle are always welcome. Chris mentioned that the next board meeting will be Tuesday, 5/09 at 6:30. It will be at Village Pizza in Corrales. We will talk about the Las Cruces trip and go over the calendar for the remainder of the year. We have been invited by the Poco Quatros Model A car club to their May breakfast. It will be Saturday 5/13 at 9 at Dave’s Valley Grill on 4th street. Our (second) May breakfast will be the morning of the Museum Car Show. He mentioned that if you are showing a car, be there by 8 but if you are just going to eat, then get there by 8:30. An announcement was also made about the Memorial Day club birthday party picnic at the Jackson’s house on 5/29. Beth included all the details in the latest newsletter. The club will provide the burgers and we are asked to bring a side, salad, or dessert. Club members were reminded to RSVP to Beth. Chris also announced that our next club meeting will be on June 6, 7pm at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center. We are working on a presentation for that evening. Chris talked about the trip to Las Cruces and the Globo Rojo Museum in June. He mentioned that hotel rooms are being held until 5/12 and the museum down there wants a list of names by 5/19. Joe provided a crime report. He said crime is not getting any better. He also mentioned that city counselors suggest demoting the mayor and going back to city manager government. As far as new business, Joyce mentioned the swap meet at the drag strip is this weekend. She mentioned the All-Clubs Picnic is coming up in August at Oak Flats. She also talked about the Patterson Estate Sale. She noted that the flyer said 5/12-5/14, but thinks the dates really are 5/11-5/13. Joyce then mentioned that the Collector Car Appreciation Day is coming up on 7/08. She doesn’t have any other details yet. Will had a show and tell item. It was a flex fuel line from one of Frank Corey’s cars. Turns out the line was not made correctly; therefore, the car wouldn’t stay running. They have since figured out the problem and replaced the line. Liz talked about the problem she is having with her new (to her) car. Joe suggested members give their input during refreshment time and maybe they could help her troubleshoot the problem. We had refreshments and the raffle. Melissa Drake, with NMTA, gave a wonderful presentation. She had a plethora of information about the transit system here in Albuquerque and the entire state.  We were all given leftover goodie bags from her recent conference. The bags had items like tire gauges, tire tread monitors, and magnetic flashlights. Everyone appreciated the presentation and there were lots of questions afterwards.

Joke of the Month

You may be from New Mexico if:

You buy salsa by the half gallon.

Your favorite restaurant has a chile list instead of a wine list.

Your Christmas decorations include “a yard of sand and 200 paper bags.“

Most restaurant names begin with El or Los.

You think a red light is just a suggestion.

You believe that using a turn signal is a sign of weakness.

You have used aluminum foil and duct tape to repair your air conditioner.

You wish you had invested in that orange barrel business.

You have driven to an Indian Casino at 3am because you were hungry.

All your out-of-state friends and relatives visit in October.

You think the Lobo fight song is “Louie, Louie“.
