President’s Message for August 2023                                        Chris Joiner

Welcome to another month. It’s hard to believe we are already to August! Where has this year gone? We have had some great events so far this year, and will hopefully have some more in the coming months.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I am ready for a little bit cooler weather. Our old cars seem to run better when it’s not so hot, too.
I hope everyone is excited for the State Fair. It will be here before we know it, and promises to be a fun time.

Minutes of the July 11th Meeting

There was nothing orderly about this meeting. When we arrived at our regular location, we were told that we were not on the schedule for the evening and that they could not accommodate us due to classrooms being shut because they didn’t have air conditioning. President Chris was in touch with Joe Abbin and Joe was able to find us a meeting spot at a different community center. Once word got relayed to everyone planning to attend and everyone arrived at the new location, it was 7:20. There were sixteen in attendance, which included our speaker and three other guests. The staff at the new place informed us that they close at 8:00 so a unanimous decision was made to skip over all our meeting agenda and go straight to the presentation. George’s brother, Robert, talked about his time at NM Tech where he learned about and worked with explosives. He showed us a video with a snippet of a class they do there where they train first responders when it comes to explosives. In the video, they filled a car full of bags of explosives and set it off so the first responders were able to see, from a distance, the damage it causes. Robert also had some videos that showed the effect of explosives on different buildings. Some of the buildings were built with windows to withstand the force and not shatter, but they flexed. Other buildings had windows that shattered. It was very interesting and kept everyone’s attention. He got lots of questions, but the staff at that location ushered us out at 8:00. We did confirm that we are on the schedule for 8/01 at our regular location so we hope that night isn’t near this chaotic.
