President’s Message for September 2020

Joe Abbin

Unfortunately, we are still in much the same shape as previous months and there is still too much uncertainty as to what we should do as far as public gatherings to schedule a normal club meeting or breakfast in September. As of 8/28, the Governor relaxed the rules to open restaurants for indoor dining at 25% capacity, and to allow “mass” gatherings of 10 people (protests/riots are unlimited). No regular club meetings or breakfast until further notice due to ongoing health concerns and evolving government rules and recommendations. The board and I are open to suggestions for activities.

A cruise and picnic organized by Philip Lovato on Saturday, August 8 to Ashley Pond in Los Alamos was very pleasant. The drive up went through Jemez Springs and was very scenic, but challenging for the 30 or 40 cars that attempted the drive and several went home on sliders. Several clubs were represented, so there were a variety of cars. I took my 1963 Galaxie because it had AC. It kept my leg cold. Roger Wilbur got the Hard Luck award for locking his wife in the trunk. I bought lunch at the Sonic down the street from the pond/park and walked over with my new BFF whose name I can’t remember. After the picnic, we visited a private toy museum graciously hosted by John, the owner. The drive home on the freeway was brutal. I should have taken the helicopter.

We are lacking nominations for our GOAT (Greatest of all time) Ford contest. Send Beth Jackson or I your nominee for flathead GOAT ASAP. As noted before, pictures would be nice but not necessary and our editor will publish entries and we will vote on winner(s).  The winner will receive “The Key”, a priceless new top secret product from Roadrunner Engineering. If no more entries are received I will award the “Key” posthumously to Jay Hertz or keep it!

Stay well

Garage Tips  By Art Leupold

Removing Stuck and Frozen Bolts

To remove rusted or frozen bolts, heat the bolt or stud, and the block, or whatever and then hold plain candlewax on the heated area.  The melted wax will seep down the threads and lubricate them so the frozen stud can now be removed.

Lug Bolts

Always use a torque wrench to tighten lug bolts.  The use of an impact wrench or a long breaker bar can strip the threads and sometimes even distort the hub.  Using the correct tools can save a lot of headaches.

How Much is My Vehicle Worth?

Joe Abbin

Most folks are at least curious about what their vehicle is worth in dollars. Usually we want an estimate for what our car would sell for or what we would have to give for one like it. Or we may want an estimate for evaluating an estate or trust or what we should insure the vehicle for. The values can vary hugely depending on desirability, rarity, condition, modifications, market conditions, etc. There are expert appraisers and several online sources for estimating vehicle value. In the end, actual sales price is determined by buyer and seller negotiation.

As an example, I searched for free online value estimates for a stock 1936 Ford, 4-door Deluxe, touring sedan. See links and results below.

1)     NADA

 https://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/1936/Ford/Model-68/4-Door-Deluxe-Tour-Fordor-Sedan/Values

Original MSRP   Low Retail   Average Retail   High Retail

              $650              $8,100          $12,550              $21,000

Values reflect actual sales. No condition ratings.

2)     Old Cars Price Guide

https://www.oldcarsweekly.com/news/old-cars-report-price-guides-gift-to-you         http://media2.fwpublications.com.s3.amazonaws.com/OCG/MARCH-APRIL2020PG.pdf

        1936 Model 68, V-8 4 door DeLuxe Touring Sedan

            6         5          4            3            2            1

        1,340   4,020   6,700   15,080   23,450   33,500

Condition 1 is perfect, Condition 3 is very good (Most cars at shows), Condition 6 is a parts car. This guide is most realistic in my experience.

3)     Hagerty Valuation Tool

         https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuationtools/1936-Ford-Model_68-Deluxe?id=45728

  • #1 Concours $39,000

  • #2 Excellent $29,500

  • #3 Good $18,500

  • #4 Fair $8,500

Condition ratings are comparable to Old Cars Price Guide. Estimates reflect insured values.
