OCTOBER V8 NATIONAL TOUR OF SOUTHERN NM
Although we are getting close to the starting line, there’s still time for you to register for the tour of Southern New Mexico. More than 20 vehicles are registered so far, with space for you and your car or truck. We will be talking about this tour for many months after it ends, so don’t miss out on the fun. The dates are October 5 through 10.  The sites on the tour are some of the best in the West and the daily mileage is easily manageable, leaving lots of time to see them. If you’re on the fence, hop off and into your Ford. You’ll love it.

OCTOBER PRESIDENT’S LETTER - R. Jeff Jackson

Our meeting program this month is another real winner.   Roger Wilbur is going to talk about his profession of artistry.   Also, The Southern New Mexico tour, that our club is sponsoring, starts on Friday October 5.  We have 21 cars signed up from as far away as Illinois.   You still have time to join us.  These tours are a great opportunity to mingle and talk without worrying about cutting the grass.   Thanks to Jay for pulling the tour together and thanks to George and Jackie for providing a vulture wagon for our peace of mind.

Thanks to Joe, Jay, David and George for agreeing to be on the nominating committee and coming up with a proposed slate of officers.  These will be presented at the October meeting with elections taking place at the November meeting.

My brother-in-law Leon called this morning bemoaning the fact that he had more doctor appointments today.  Don’t be concerned, nothing serious, just podiatrist, hearing, teeth etc.  He says the doctors are telling him he is getting old and what they can’t fix he will have to live with.  He is a wise man and has already pared down to two old cars.

That, plus some recent activities, got me thinking that all of us are getting older.   Well, maybe you aren’t but, I bet your spouse is!   So, what are we going to do?  Of course, the techies have it figured out.  We will just get in our new car and push one button, and say I want to go to the store.  The smart aleck car will respond, “what store?”  You will remember that you want to go to a store but not the name so you say “stupid car, I want to go to the grocery store!”   That will prompt the reply you expected, “Stupid man, this is Wednesday so I know you want to go to the grocery store.  You always go to the grocery store on Wednesday.   Which grocery store do you want to go to?  The one near the house or the one with the cute checkout lady?”   Of course, this all occurs with your wife patiently waiting outside while you try to remember how to unlock the car doors.

Point being, eventually we have to learn new things and rid ourselves of some old stuff.  Unless you have grandchildren that want to learn how to drive a car rather than just push a button and talk to it.   Honestly, do you have enough grandchildren you trust to give an old car to?   Maybe time to start thinking like Leon and accept that what they can’t fix you’ll have to live with.

Minutes of the September 4th, 2018 Meeting

Beth Jackson, Secretary

President Jeff called the meeting to order.  David brought guest Debbie Jones.  A hearty welcome was extended to Mary, Frank’s sister and one of our newer members.  Everyone reported having received their newsletter.  David reported that the budget is on track and he caught up on fees for a non-profit to the state, the club was several years in arrears.

Happy Birthday was wished to Joyce Clements, Jeff Jackson and Mary Gorenz.  Happy Anniversary wishes to Tom & Dee Patterson, Larry & Lorna Azevedo and Max and Johanne Glover.

Thanks to Max for refreshments.  Next month Amy & Chris Joiner will provide refreshments.

The For Sale/Wanted sheet was passed around for additions, deletions, and corrections.

Old Business:  Joyce, reporting for the New Mexico Car Council, said the Swap Meet is on target with around 370 spaces sold.  Volunteers are needed.

The Recipe of the Month for September was provided by Joyce Clements.  David McLain offered to provide a recipe for October.

Jay reported for the October National Tour that there are 19 cars signed up to date, with several more inquiries being made.

The Dick Precit Memorial Award, decided at the Memorial Day picnic, was presented to David McLain for his ’51 Ford Tudor Custom.  Joe Abbin, the picnic organizer, presented the plaque to David.

New Business:  September’s breakfast will be held Saturday, the 15th at 8:30am at the Cracker Barrel on San Antonio.  This location was selected by Amy Joiner, who unfortunately will not be able to attend.  Gary McGlasson suggested Duran’s Pharmacy, near Old Town, for the October breakfast.  If it does not open early enough, the Church Street Café will be substituted.

Sunday, September 9th is V8 Day at the New Mexico State Fair.  Meet at 7:30am at the old Caravan East parking lot on Central.

Featured member of the month of September was Roger Wilbur.  Jeff asked Joyce if she would be interviewed for October’s newsletter.

Jeff asked for volunteers for a nominating committee to select candidates for next year’s slate of officers.  No one volunteered so he said he would appoint a committee during refreshments.  The slate will be announced at the October meeting with the election being held at the November meeting.

Joe reported no word on his stolen trailer.  Car thefts are down a little probably because of the new task force that was set up to deter thefts.  Primary issue is salvage yards.

Jeff received word that there is a ’49 Mercury for sale in Roswell, 4door, 95% complete with a spare motor and some parts.  They are asking $25,000.  See Jeff for more information.

The Joiner auction will be held on Saturday, September 8th at 9am at the J & R Museum.  Go to DotyAuctions.com for more information.

Show and Tell:  Joe displayed a book on the V8 engine which contains a bit of historical data.  It is a twin book selling for $60.  He also showed a ’36 coil, the only year this particular coil was made, which was flat like a pancake.  Max announced he will not be attending the swap meet this year as he has an atrial fibrillation procedure coming up.  Anyone who wants to sell more stuff can come by Max’s and take some of his parts.

Refreshments were enjoyed, the raffle was conducted and then Jeff showed some of the video he has taken of members talking about their particular cars.  Members particularly enjoyed seeing footage of Frank Corey.

The meeting was adjourned.

September Breakfast at Cracker Barrel                                       Ray’s Granddaughter

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

David McLain

Grandmother's Famous Cranberry Bread

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup sugar

1 ½ tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

½ tsp baking soda

¼ cup butter

1 egg (beaten)

1 tsp grated orange peel

¾ cup orange juice

1 ½ cups raisins

1 ½ cups fresh or frozen (thawed) cranberries, chopped (dried cranberries can also work) (walnuts or pecans can be a good option)

Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Add egg, orange peel, and orange juice all at once. Stir just until mixture is evenly moist. Fold in raisins and cranberries (and nuts, if desired). Spoon into a greased 9 X 5 X 3-inch loaf pan and bake at 350 for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Test for doneness with a toothpick inserted in the center; it is done when the toothpick comes out clean. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.                                                               David & Debbie

Featured Member of the Month

Joyce Clements

You know some things we think are truisms - like where there is a Joyce, there is a Jim.  Not always!   Joyce was born in Thomasville, Georgia in the year when she was born - not our business.  She was the second of 8 children in an Air Force family.  That tells us two things: 1) she moved around a lot and 2) she was like a mother to many of her siblings.  Besides moving frequently around the United States, she spent one year in Japan.  In 1954 she moved to Gallup and in 1955 to Albuquerque.  She graduated from high school in Albuquerque and attended UNM.  She also worked in banking and computer programming during her time at UNM.  She graduated with a degree in education and a minor in Library Science.  Joyce had a career teaching in Albuquerque schools.

Joyce had a friend in high school with a 1932 Plymouth coupe with the rumble seat which she enjoyed and she began noticing older cars.  Her first car was a 1940 Ford sedan.   Joyce and Jim bought their 1940 Ford coupe after they were married and have driven it a lot.  We know how she and Jim are fond of unrestored original cars and how much they both know about cars. They’ve also taught much of that to their son, Will.
Interesting story, Joyce didn’t always give her correct name when asked.  I assume too many cute fellows were asking her.  But one day while at UNM, according to her “a strange guy came up and said, “Hi, I’m Jim, what’s your name?”  And she answered, “Joyce.”  So that is the Jim and Joyce story.
Joyce says they have about 8 running cars and some others.  She is an active member of the New Mexico Car Council and several clubs including ours.   Joyce wants to back off some of her activities to spend more time on hobbies which include quilting, vintage clothes and sewing.

JUST FOR FUN

A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car.  His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll talk about the car."

The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd settle for the offer, and they agreed on it.

After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've brought your grades up and I've observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you haven't had your hair cut."

The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair."

"Did you also notice they all walked everywhere they went?"

2018 NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR

We had a great time at the Fair! We had a guest appearance from the Blues Brothers and many interested flathead fans.  We were a little short of cars compared to the A and T crowd, but a nice showing.

Richard and Barbara Polk won the State Fair's Special Pick award.  Thanks to all those who attended and helped to make this a very good day.          Joe Abbin
