You know some things we think are truisms - like where there is a Joyce, there is a Jim. Not always! Joyce was born in Thomasville, Georgia in the year when she was born - not our business. She was the second of 8 children in an Air Force family. That tells us two things: 1) she moved around a lot and 2) she was like a mother to many of her siblings. Besides moving frequently around the United States, she spent one year in Japan. In 1954 she moved to Gallup and in 1955 to Albuquerque. She graduated from high school in Albuquerque and attended UNM. She also worked in banking and computer programming during her time at UNM. She graduated with a degree in education and a minor in Library Science. Joyce had a career teaching in Albuquerque schools. Joyce had a friend in high school with a 1932 Plymouth coupe with the rumble seat which she enjoyed and she began noticing older cars. Her first car was a 1940 Ford sedan. Joyce and Jim bought their 1940 Ford coupe after they were married and have driven it a lot. We know how she and Jim are fond of unrestored original cars and how much they both know about cars. They’ve also taught much of that to their son, Will. Interesting story, Joyce didn’t always give her correct name when asked. I assume too many cute fellows were asking her. But one day while at UNM, according to her “a strange guy came up and said, “Hi, I’m Jim, what’s your name?” And she answered, “Joyce.” So that is the Jim and Joyce story.
Joyce says they have about 8 running cars and some others. She is an active member of the New Mexico Car Council and several clubs including ours. Joyce wants to back off some of her activities to spend more time on hobbies which include quilting, vintage clothes and sewing.
