September 3rd Club Meeting – The USS New Mexico Battleship

Meeting is at 7pm, Tuesday, September 3rd, at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center, 7600 Carmel NE.  The meeting program will be by John Taylor on the USS New Mexico Battleship. This spring marked the 107th anniversary of the launching of the battleship USS New Mexico (BB-40), called by many The Queen of the Sea.  This magnificent warship witnessed the end of both World War I and World War II and earned six battle starts for her participation in the Pacific Island campaign.  We will trace the history of The Queen of the Sea, and explore the life of a sailor aboard one of the country’s largest naval vessels.

As usual, there will be a raffle with lots of goodies, please bring anything you might want to give away.  Refreshments will be provided by Max & Johanne Glover.

State Fair Car Show

V8 Day at the New Mexico State Fair will take place on Sunday, September 8th.  Please gather at the east end of the Fair Plaza parking lot at the NW corner of San Pedro & Lomas by 7:45 am so we can drive in to the fairgrounds together starting at 8 am.  There will be no charge for those entering with the club.  We will drive in according to year of the car driven and will try to eat breakfast together after getting set up.

Members on the west side can meet at Lowe’s on Alameda at 7am to drive together.

Let’s have a great turnout this year!

2024 September President’s Message - Joe Abbin

John Taylor will be the speaker at our September meeting at the North Domingo Baca Multi-generational Center. See announcement elsewhere in this newsletter. John is an excellent speaker who presented previously to the club on the 2926 locomotive restoration and was originally scheduled to speak in June before our meeting was cancelled.

Likewise this month we will be exhibiting at the state fair. This is a great event for showing off our flatheads and recruiting new members. I will be asking for volunteers to man an info table and pass out new club business cards for our club as part of our display. See more elsewhere in this news note. Likewise, there is info on planned tours. Busy month!

See you at the meeting and the fair. Flathead weather (cool) is coming!

Joe Abbin

Minutes of the August Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Joe. There were twenty-seven people present. Included in that were Gus’s cousin and new member Steven Hinken’s brother. Treasurer Amy reported that everything is fine. Joe suggested reducing the dues by $5 and asked Amy to prepare a budget to present, comparing this year’s spending to last year’s.

Joe offered birthday and anniversary greetings. It was announced that Jim Clements is turning 85! It was also announced that Johanne Glover has covid. Thanks to Gary & Laurel for our delicious refreshments. There were no additions or corrections to the July meeting minutes. Joe Baird did not have a car council report since he was travelling when they had their meeting. However, Joyce reported on some upcoming events, including the All-Clubs Picnic on August 11.

Joe talked about the offer the club has received regarding the pickup that has been donated to the club. Some former members, who are now in Texas, would like to buy it for $700. Joe said we will consider other offers. It turns out there are several members who are interested in looking at it and may make an offer.

Saturday, August 10th will be our club breakfast. It will be at 8:30 at Hello Deli on Jefferson.

Tuesday, September 3rd  will be our next meeting. John Taylor will give an informative presentation for us.

Joe announced that our day at the State Fair is Sunday, September 8th. He volunteered the Corrales group to coordinate the day. Gus still has the stanchions and banner. We need 10-12 cars to participate. More information will be forthcoming.

There were some interesting items for show and tell. We then had an exciting raffle, with a few prizes, and refreshments.

Joyce gave us a wonderful, and informative, presentation about fashion in the flathead era. Joyce, Lorna, Vi, and Will were all dressed up in era fashion. They each told us about the era they were representing and what was different about that era than others. Joyce brought lots of visual aids and was not lacking in information. Everyone enjoyed it.

October 11-13, Friday-Sunday, Fall Aspen Tour with Model A Club  Chris and Amy Joiner are coordinating. The plan is to meet on Friday, October 11th , 9am at Bernalillo Walmart and head out for Durango. Saturday we will drive the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton, have lunch, then return to our hotel in Durango. We plan to leave Durango Sunday morning, traveling through Pagosa Springs, Espanola, Santa Fe and Madrid to come home. We have a block of rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn in Durango. The rate is $235/night. It is the lowest rate we were able to negotiate. October is still their busy time, so hotels are either booked up or ridiculously expensive. To book a room, please go to https://www.hilton.com, put Durango, Colorado in the "where to" field, enter the dates of 10/11 to 10/13. Next, click the "special rates" box and enter TCC (Tumbleweed Car Club) in the Group Code Box. The negotiated price will then populate. The deadline to book is 9/16. If you have trouble booking, please let Chris or Amy know.

Jokes of the Month

One Sunday the pastor was talking about prayer during the children’s sermon.  One precocious six-year-old piped up and said, “My mommy prays with me every night!” “That’s wonderful,” said the pastor.  “What does she say when she prays with you? Do you use a certain prayer?”  “Oh, no,” the boy replied, “She just says, ‘Thank you, God. He’s in bed!’”

COMMITTEE: A body that keeps minutes and wastes hours.

YAWN: An honest opinion openly expressed.

WRINKLES: Something other people have …. Similar to my character lines.

OLD: I very quietly confided to my friend that I was having an affair.  She turned to me and asked, “Are you having it catered?” And that is the definition of ‘OLD’ !!!

Waymo, the future of motoring?                                Joe Abbin

In August I attended a presentation on autonomous (self driving) vehicles undergoing test in Phoenix and elsewhere. In case you haven’t noticed, new vehicles have been incorporating more and more driver ”aids” to help us backup, maintain lanes, safe distances, fasten our seatbelts, stay awake, etc. Tesla and others can allow us to drive “hands off”. The ultimate in this movement is the Waymo fleet. See waymo.com . These are human driverless cars that we can summon like an Uber to pick us up and deliver us to any destination in their service area. Wow! There are over 600 of these in the Phonix area. I was behine two of them at one time during my recent trip in Phoenix. They reportedly have a better safety record than the average driver. They are produced by Jaguar in cooperation with and operated by Waymo. They cost about $60k each and are not available for private purchase……too bad? How about a retrofit kit for my 1940?

Mother-Daughter Dress-Alikes

In the 1940s and 1950s, it was popular for family members to dress alike. Clothing and patterns were available for mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, siblings (especially twins) to dress alike. Dress-up clothes in particular were bought or made alike for family outings. The clothes could all be the same color/pattern, but not always. The coat pattern is from 1944 and looks like a mother and daughter bound for church. The apron pattern is from 1953,and  shows a mom and her "little helper" dressed for serving at a special occasion, as a party or company for dinner. Usually the little helper felt grown-up and proud to help. Sons also liked to dress like Daddy in a matching suit and tie or sport shirt. As kids, my mom made matching dresses for my sisters and me, until we got grown-up enough to want to be different; my dad and brothers got matching sport shirts. It was also more economical to buy one large piece of fabric and have no large leftover scraps. One pattern that fit the middle guy could be enlarged or reduced to fit several ages. Those were the days when a dollar saved meant a paycheck stretched.
