NOVEMBER MEETING
We will meet this month on November 2 at 7:00 pm at North Domingo Baca Mutigenerational Center, classroom 7 at 7600 Carmel NE, one-half block North and West of Paseo Del Norte and Wyoming. This is a fine facility and quite accessible. Masks will be required.
The program for the November meeting, in addition to election of officers, is “getting to know club members”. We have very interesting club members who had lives before Flathead V8’s. Periodically we will invite some members to talk about themselves outside of car ownership. We trust these discussions will be enlightening and entertaining. In November Joe Warren and George Abernathy will start these programs giving us some additional information about who they were and what they have done in the past.
Several of the models and memorabilia donated by Betty Leupold will be in the club raffle.

President’s Message for November 2021 Joe Abbin
We will meet this month on November 2 at 7:00 pm at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center, classroom 7, at 7600 Carmel NE, just one-half block North and West of Paseo Del Norte and Wyoming. Parking is well-lit. This is a fine facility and quite accessible. Masks will be required.
The most important item for this meeting will be the election of 2022 officers. A ballot is included with this news note and others will be available at the meeting. Energetic and capable officers make for a vital club. We have a great slate as follows:
Chris Joiner, President; Jeff Jackson, Vice-President; Beth Jackson, Secretary; Amy Joiner, Treasurer. Board member candidates are: Joe Warren, George Abernathy, Larry Bost, and Roger Wilbur. Joe Abbin will also be a board member as past President. Jeff would like a co-VP since he will be out of town often next year. The VP is responsible for coordinating meetings and activities. All of us are expected to suggest meetings and activities and coordinate same, but it would be nice to get a formal helper for Jeff. As always suggestions for future speakers, meeting places and activities are welcome.
Also at this meeting we will get to know some of our members better as we get to hear about highlights of their careers. See write-up elsewhere.
Christmas Party
Our annual Christmas party will be a potluck on Saturday afternoon, December 11th at 1pm. The party will be at the Jackson’s house (8322 Calle Picaflor NW). The cost is $3 per person. The hosts will cook the meat, with side dishes provided by those attending. Tea, water and coffee will be provided. Reservations are required and can be made and paid for at the November club meeting or by contacting Beth Jackson before December 6th. Reservations may also be made by mail to Beth at the above address (zip 87120). Requested side dishes are salad, vegetable, dessert or bread and can be confirmed when you call or send in your reservation. Remember there is no club meeting in December. We have followed this format for several years and we have large crowds, delicious food and a very pleasant time.
Our annual gift exchange will take place during the Christmas Party. If you wish to participate, bring a wrapped gift labeled male or female, and you will go home with a lovely gift. Please make the gift something you would like to receive and keep the cost under $20. We also collect for Roadrunner Food Bank; leave your cash donation and we will make a donation from the club. Please call Beth at 505-908-7564 if you have any questions.
NEWSLETTER NOTE
Members are encouraged to submit articles, ads and photographs for inclusion in the newsletter. Minutes of the V8 Club Meeting – October 5, 2021
The meeting was called to order by President Joe Abbin. Joe wished Amy Joiner Happy Birthday on the 25th and Happy Anniversary to Joe and Anita Warren on the 7th (their 49th!) and Gus and Debbie Van de Velde on the 30th. There were 22 present counting our speaker Luis Reyes and his wife and two daughters. Treasurer George Abernathy reported an income of $85 and stated we are following our budget. No one has checked our post office box in a while and Joe volunteered to do that.
Joyce Clements reported that the Car Council’s last meeting of her year will be in November. There are quite a few car shows coming up. You can check the car council website for details - NMCarCouncil.com or call Joyce for particulars on an event at 505-884-7912. The council is asking for suggestions for a swap meet location for next year’s meet. They need a location large enough to mark off 350-400 spaces (12 x 20) and park several hundred cars.
The meeting was suspended so that Luis Reyes (of The Santa Fe Detail) could do his presentation before the time got too late. After a break for refreshments and the raffle, Luis proceeded to demonstrate several techniques of polishing on the trunk of Joe’s Mercury. He did a three-step process using an electric polisher, then also a quicker two-step process and a hand rub. The difference was amazing!
When Luis finished, it was getting late and the meeting was adjourned.
Minutes of the V8 Club Board Meeting – October 19, 2021
Attendees were Joe Abbin, Chris and Amy Joiner, George Abernathy and Jeff and Beth Jackson. Joe said he has received a call from Steve Schulties about the visit to Jay’s garage. The club would like to do that on Saturday, November 13th. Joe will confirm that date with Steve.
A discussion was held on who the board would present to the club as the slate of officers for the November election. After much discussion, the following was agreed upon: Chris Joiner, President; Joyce Clements or Jeff Jackson, Vice-President or possibly co- VPs; Beth Jackson, Secretary; Amy Joiner, Treasurer. Suggested Board members are: Joe Warren, George Abernathy, Larry Bost, Roger Wilbur, Vern Willan, and Larry Icerman. Joe Abbin would be a board member as past President. Jeff volunteered to contact Larry Bost, Roger, and Vern while Joe will contact Joyce and Larry Icerman. The final ballot will appear in November newsletter and will be voted on at the meeting on November 2. Nominations may also be made at the November meeting before the vote.
Treasurer George will pay the Bill for D & O insurance offered through the national club. Beth will bring the renewal bill for the website to the next meeting.
The Jackson’s were asked and offered their house for the annual Christmas Potluck. The 2nd Saturday in December was agreed on, December 11th. $3 per person was the agreed charge for the pot luck meal with the club providing meat and utensils. A notice will appear in the November newsletter and a sign up sheet will be out at the November meeting.
The meeting was adjourned.

FIRST PLASTIC CAR
Lowell Overly is seated at left in the world’s first plastic car, which he designed, built and introduced to the public on August 13, 1941, at the climax of Dearborn’s annual community festival. The vehicle, completed under Henry Ford’s close supervision, was a forerunner of vehicles to come, being small, lightweight, and fuel- efficient.
“You have to project yourself back to what we knew about plastic 40 years ago to realize how advanced this idea was,” Overly recently recalled. The car was not mass-produced, however, because of problems associated with the plastic, including its smell. It was molded from several common crops including soybeans, wheat, hemp, flax, and ramie.
Overly, who retired as a process engineer in Ford’s metal stamping division in 1967, always felt that the car was on the right track. “And from what I hear about today’s new uses of plastics in cars, I guess I was right,” he adds. The initial plastic car generated tremendous publicity, and represents one of the outstanding achievements of Henry Ford’s later years.
In 1941, there were numerous jokes about the vegetable content in the vehicle. My favorite is this one:
Mother (to recalcitrant small son): “Now eat your succotash, Freddy, like a good boy.”
Freddy: “I say it’s a flivver; and I say to hell with it!”
