State Fair Car Show

Please put Sunday, September 8th on your calendar as the New Mexico State Fair Car Show. We will meet and all drive in together so we can park along Main Street. We’ll let you know the when and where at the meeting and in the September newsletter.

2024 August President’s Message - Joe Abbin

J oyce Clements from our club will be the speaker at our August meeting at the North Domingo Baca Multi-generational Center. She will talk on clothing fashions in the Flathead Era (1932-1953)! Joyce has briefed us before on shoes, swim suits, underwear, etc. from those times and her depth of knowledge never fails to amaze and entertain me. See announcement elsewhere in this newsletter. Come in costume and/or bring grandma’s bra for show and tell! Free raffle ticket for best Flathead Era attire!

We will learn about old (vintage?) clothes at the meeting but that begs the question of what is “old”? Some of us own cars over 100 years old. Some of us are almost 100 years old. Wow, maybe 100 is the magic number for old. Speaking of cars, according to S&P Global Mobility, there are about 286 million vehicles currently on the road in the US and their average age is 12.6 years old. These are both new records. The mix is also changing from cars to light trucks and SUVs. More cars are being scrapped than being bought new while about twice as many truck types are being bought new than are being scrapped. Bye-bye old cars (and old people)! I’m going to party like it is 1950 in my Mercury (only 74 years old) before it and I get to be 100 (old).

See you young folks at the meeting. Drive an old truck and buck the tide!

Joe Abbin

Minutes of the July Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Joe. There were twenty-six people present. Included in that were three guests: Steve Hinken and Gus & Debbie’s two granddaughters. Treasurer Amy reported that everything is fine and that the roster has been sent to the national club. Joe mentioned that he has some expenses that need approval before being reimbursed. He mentioned some options regarding the F-1 pickup truck that has been donated to the club. He also talked about going to the Father’s Day Roadster show in Pomona, CA. He said there were about four hundred cars there.

Joe offered birthday and anniversary greetings. Thanks to Don Gutierrez for our delicious refreshments. There were no minutes needing approval for June since we did not have a meeting. Joyce reported that Joe Baird is the new NM Car Council representative. She also mentioned that Collector Car Appreciation Day was coming up the following weekend at the Wheels Museum.

Larry Azevedo mentioned that on July 4 they are having their annual picnic after the Corrales Parade. If joining the parade, be in line by the Elementary School at 9. The parade will start at 10.

Saturday, July 13th will be our club breakfast. It will be at 8:30 at the Range Café near Cottonwood Mall.

Tuesday, August 6th will be our next meeting. Joyce is planning a program on Flathead Era fashion.

Joe asked for approval (per Amy’s request) to purchase a memorial brick for Mary Gorenz. This was brought up back in January but had been postponed. The motion was approved, with no opposition. It was also decided that there is nobody else who passed away in 2023 who needs to be included. Beth reminded us that a previous motion had been passed, we automatically purchase a brick each year in January/February, without having to get approval by the board and then the club.

Larry Bost, George Abernathy, and Joe all brought interesting items for show and tell. We then had an exciting raffle, with lots of prizes, and refreshments.

Debbie Van De Velde gave us an interesting presentation. She talked about her sheep and how she got into raising them. She brought some of her tools for the process of turning wool into yarn. We learned that process is incredibly involved, and she used to do it all herself. We all learned quite a bit, and we may just have to have her speak again sometime.

Amy Joiner

Our speaker, Debbie
