FEBRUARY 1ST MEETING-Stories of Early Albuquerque with Rosemary McNerny-Winkler

Rosemary Winkler is a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. She was always interested in family history, and listened to their stories, always making notes. In about 1995, Rosemary joined the Albuquerque Genealogical Society (AGS). She taught a class on publishing family history at the UNM Continuing Education Center and volunteered at the Genealogy Center. After publishing several of her own and other family histories, she became the editor of the AGS Quarterly newsletter and in 2019 she received a NM Press Women Communications Contest First Place award.

What started as a fun project of writing articles for the AGS newsletter evolved into a book, and in 2021, she wrote “Stories of Early Albuquerque” about the history of the families who helped usher our city into the modern age. Some of the families in the book have highly recognizable names, such as Girard, Lovelace and Montgomery, while others are not so well known. But all are historically significant. Come hear all about it at our January meeting!  We will be meeting at the J&R Museum Building at 3650 Hwy 528, Rio Rancho.

As always suggestions for future speakers, meeting places and activities are welcome.

February Tour and Lunch

This month we will be visiting the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Moriarty. We will meet at the Smith’s at Tramway and Central on Saturday, February 12 at 10:00 am and proceed along old Route 66 to the Moriarty airport. The CAF has a hanger on the last row at the east end of the airport. They are restoring an AT 11 WWII bomber trainer and exhibiting a previously restored PT 26 trainer airplane. They also serve a low-cost luncheon between 11:30 and 1:00 pm as a fundraiser for those who choose to dine onsite. What these folks are doing is a marvel! See www.lobowing.org for more on their operation.

President’s Message for February 2022                                      Chris Joiner

We had a great turn out for the first club breakfast of the year.  I am pretty sure there were 17 of us who enjoyed a slow, but yummy, breakfast at Cracker Barrel.  I think we are all ready for restaurants to not be short staffed.  After Cracker Barrel, we ventured over to Jim Guthrie's Evolution of Wheels Museum.  We had several more of our members join us there.  There were also several members of the Poco Quatros Model A club and a few from the hot rod club.  There we saw Jim's collection of beautiful cars, including several Mustangs, a Model T, a Model A, a DeLorean, and many airplane models.  Jim is a Ford fan and a former Indy car driver.  He is a clearly a very successful businessman!  These are the types of activities I hope we are able to have more of this year.

The board has been brainstorming and coming up with wonderful ideas for activities to do after breakfast throughout the year.  We have also been hard at work planning entertaining and informative meeting programs.  We are always looking for input and ideas.

Please make plans to be at our February 1st club meeting.  It will be at the J&R Museum building at 7:00pm.  Rosemary Winkler will be giving a very interesting presentation on the stories of early Albuquerque, including speaking about some famous families from Albuquerque....French and Montgomery just to name a couple.

I also hope everyone can join us Saturday, February 12th for our trip to the Moriarty Airport to see the Commemorative Airforce.  We'll be having lunch out there.  I am sure it will be a very interesting tour.  The more the merrier.

Minutes of the January 4th, 2022 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by President Chris Joiner.  Chris introduced the new officers for 2022 and welcomed everyone.  There were around 17 members in attendance and one guest, David F. David, who was invited by Bob Payne. Beth reported that the memorial brick we order annually from the Ford Foundation would include the names of Tom Patterson and Bob Farnholtz and asked if anyone knew of the passing of any other members in the past year.

Treasurer Amy reported that former treasurer George had done an ok job for the past two years.  She put together a budget for the coming year, expecting expenses of $1293 and a projected income of $1240.

Birthday wishes were extended to Demetrio Lee, Don Gutierrez and David McLain with anniversary wishes being made to Chris and Amy Joiner.  Amy and Beth were thanked for providing refreshments and a signup sheet for future meetings was circulated.  Also, the for sale/wanted sheet was circulated for additions and corrections.

Beth reported that there were 31 in attendance at the Christmas party, $65 in expenses, and $40 returned to the club.  We collected $213 which was donated to Roadrunner Food Bank.

Joyce, reporting for the Car Council, gave the date of May 15 for the Museum Car Show, the All-Clubs Picnic sometime in August, and the swap meet will be at a new location in September.

January’s breakfast will be held Saturday, January 8th at Cracker Barrel on San Antonio.  Afterward there will be a tour of Jim Guthrie’s private Evolution of Wheels Museum.

There will be a board meeting next Tuesday, January 11th at the J&R Museum building.  Our next club meeting will be Tuesday, February 1 at 7pm at the J&R Museum building with an informative presentation by Rosemary Winkler on her book, “Stories of Albuquerque” arranged by Joe Abbin.  Members of some other car clubs have been invited to join us.

Chris asked for suggestions for topics for future meetings.  Jeff Jackson suggested a program on crime prevention, especially on concealed carry, self-defense, and pepper sprays.

It was mentioned that the Scottsdale Auctions will be in late January and some are free to Ford Foundation Members.

For show and tell, Max Glover brought a small silver container that was used to hold tire valve stem cores. In the ‘30s and ‘40s the need to repair flats on the road was greater and having the valve stem cores was important.  Joyce brought calendars and posters to give away to all takers.  During a break, refreshments were enjoyed and raffle tickets were purchased.  The raffle prizes included items donated by Betty Leupold and jam donated by George. After the raffle the meeting continued with a very interesting program from Joe Warren.  He was an Air Force Pilot and then worked for the U.N. and then for a private contractor.  He traveled all over the world, in particular some of the “hot spots” and more dangerous places.  Thank you for sharing some of your adventures with us, Joe.                                                                       Beth Jackson, Secretary

 JOKES OF THE MONTH

JOKES OF THE MONTH

I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it.

Employment application blanks always ask who is to be called in case of an emergency.  I think you should write, “An ambulance.”

The older you get the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.

Have you ever noticed: The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are XL.

Did you ever notice that when you put the 2 words “The” and “IRS” together it spells “Theirs.”

Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

Some people try to turn back their “odometers.” Not me. I want people to know why I look this way.

I’ve traveled a long way and a lot of the roads were not paved.

Ah! Being young is beautiful but being old is comfortable.

Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth.

May you always have:  Love to share, Cash to spare, Tires with air, and friends who care.

Breakfast at Cracker Barrel

The above table and following information are from Ford V-8 Service Bulletins: 1941-1948 Complete compiled by Dan R. Post in 1977.

Many factors can affect the fuel consumption on the Ford V-8’s. Here are some preliminary steps that can be performed.

a) Make sure all maintenance and lubrication are up-to-date and checked, underneath the car, under the hood and in the driver’s compartment.

b) Check for dragging brakes and proper tire inflation.

c) Be sure the exhaust system is not plugged or does not have a bent pipe.

d) Check for proper wheel alignment.

e) Check the spark plug gap.

f) Make sure the accelerator pump link is in the correct position for the season.

g) Run the engine at idle speed, remove a spark plug wire and check for proper spark strength.

h) Be sure the electrical and carburetion are tuned properly.

i) Check the fuel pump pressure.

j) Make sure the air cleaner has a clean filter.

k) Watch your driving techniques to ensure you are not contributing to the problem.

Your owner’s manual will have the specifications that you need to keep the car in proper running condition. Find a reliable mechanic if you need help with the checks and tune-up.
