JANUARY 4TH MEETING

We know Joe and Anita Warren joined the club last year.  And, we know he is eagerly waiting for Little John to complete the work on his ’40.  But do we really know what Joe did as he traveled the world?  No, I didn’t think so.  Come to the January 4th meeting where Joe will tell us about his adventures.  The meeting will be at 7pm at the North Domingo Baca Mutigenerational Center, classroom 7 (upstairs) at 7600 Carmel NE, one-half block north and west of Paseo Del Norte and Wyoming.  We will also have some cool raffle items donated by Betty Leupold.

JANUARY BREAKFAST AND TOUR

This month we have a great tour planned.  After breakfast at Cracker Barrel (5200 San Antonio Dr NE) at 8:30 am on Saturday, January 8th, our club has been invited to visit and tour Jim Guthrie’s private Evolution of Wheels Museum.  The tour will start at 10:00 am at 3900 Rutledge Rd. NE 87109, near the Journal Center.  Rutledge is between Masthead and Hawkins and 3900 is about one block west off Washington.  The museum entrance is only marked EOV.

Jim Guthrie is the owner of Car Crafters auto body shops.  In addition to being a successful business man, Jim is a longtime Ford fan and a former Indy car driver.  The museum is virtually 100% Fords.  How great is that?  Don’t miss it!

President’s Message for January 2022                                      Chris Joiner

Hello Club,

Welcome to 2022. I hope your holiday season was great. My name is Chris Joiner, for those of you who don’t know me. I have been around cars all my life. I have done the Great American Race many times. I have five cars that I inherited from my grandpa…1930 Model A, 1932 Ford four door, 1935 Ford pickup truck, 1936 Ford Phaeton, and 1940 Mercury Coupe. I try to drive them, as long as they’re running, as often as I can.
My hopes for this year are that we can all reconnect and enjoy our cars at several events. I would also like us to help each other out by getting together to use our talents by fixing whatever is wrong with our cars. I would like to grow our membership by getting involved in different events to promote our club. Furthermore, my main goal is to enjoy 2022 since we have been on hold the past two years due to the pandemic. I am excited for the January breakfast, which will be Saturday, January 8th at 8:30 at Cracker Barrel on San Antonio, followed by a tour of Jim Guthrie’s Museum afterward.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

The Christmas party at the Jacksons‘ house had 31 celebrants in attendance.  The food was delicious (we have many experienced cooks) and the gift exchange was fun with everyone ending up with a great gift.  After expenses, $40 remained to give back to the club.  The pictures that follow were taken by Joe Abbin, Jackie Abernathy, and Karlene Phillips.  Thank you all.

REMOVING TIE ROD ENDS

From The Rumble Sheet, newsletter of the Badger State RG, November, 2007

By Clem Clement

I found that I needed to readjust my drag link on my ’39 pickup. I had installed a NOS one, without adjusting it, and the steering wheel was cocked a bit to the left. It was explained to me that that means the gears are not riding on the center of their travel.

So I get my fork out and a Biiiiiiig hammer and remove the tie rod nut and begin to use the fork.....and a strong voice comes in both ears. “Rich, what did I teach thee back in ’56 about removing tie rod ends?” My Uncle Raeman, passed lo these 48 years ago this month, had carefully taught me how to remove the tapered tie rod end. His voice was as clear now as then: remove the nut, then turn the wheel so you can get a good shot at the arm with the tapered hole in it. He had a wonderful 3-pound hammer on a 6-inch handle that he loved. It was just for this purpose, to get wrist-power in a confined space. I have such a hammer and ran for it. By whacking the tapered hole on the spindle as it sits, so the shock of the hit is absorbed by the spindle pin, the tie rod end drops out very easily. The hole “ovals” just a bit and out comes the tie rod end.

An alternate method would be to use the correct tool - >>>>> KRW 3289-A, pictured below. Now go find one at Hershey.
