Breakfast Group

For breakfast this month we will meet again at Hello Deli near the Journal Center on Jefferson on Saturday, June 12, at 8:30 am.  Good food, fair prices and very nice indoor and patio dining.  See you there!

President’s Message for June 2021                                                Joe Abbin

We had our first in-person meeting of the year in May and it was a good one. The Joiners graciously offered their former museum site for our meeting. They still have a wonderful collection which we could view. We had a large turnout of members and guests including the classic Chevy club. See the minutes elsewhere in this newsletter. The Zoom setup seemed like a good idea but didn’t work very well for our on-line participants. If there is sufficient interest we may try again with better equipment since we have many out of town members.

The next meeting will be held at my shop at 9800 Acoma Rd SE (2 blocks South of Central, 2 blocks West of Eubank). Our speaker will be Civil War expert, George Sanders. He will review NM civil war history, and since George is a collector, he will focus on “Civil War Coins and Currency”. He is also an expert on Confederate and Union arms, uniforms, equipment, etc. His talks are always interesting. Anybody else with show and tell on Civil War items, please bring. Also, I have a very limited number of chairs so please bring your own to assure a seat! There are many eating places in the neighborhood (Owl Cafe, Applebee’s, Golden Pride, Taco Cabana, Freddies’s, and Bombs Away brewery right across the street) if you want to make an evening of good cheer.

As always suggestions for future speakers and activities are welcome.

Future Activities

June 12. For breakfast this month we will meet again at Hello Deli near the Journal Center on Jefferson on Saturday, June 12, at 8:30 am. Good food, fair prices and very nice indoor and patio dining. The Burrito Bandits will also be on site!

July 6. General meeting with Mark Krueger on “Insuring Your Classic Car”. Mark is a multi-line broker for insurance of all types. There are several options for your classic and he will explain the pros and cons.

August 3. General meeting featuring the national Early Ford V-8 Club’s video on “Judging: Like Henry Made Them”. The Clements family are long term national judges and they will offer additional insights. Even if you don’t intend to show your car, you will find this material interesting and helpful.

Minutes of the V8 Club Meeting - May 4, 2021

The May meeting was held in person at the Joiner Museum in Rio Rancho.  Thanks to Chris & Amy for hosting.  There were still quite a few cars in the museum and everyone enjoyed looking at them.

President Joe Abbin called the meeting to order and had everyone introduce themselves.  There were at least 26 people present including members of the Chevy Club and several guests.

Happy Birthday greetings were exteded to Bob Napier and Betty Leupold.

Joyce Clements reported for the NM Car Council.  The annual Museum Car Shoiw will not be held but will be replaced by a Poker Cruise on May 16th starting in the Museum parking lot.  There will be a Collector Car Appreciation Day in July and Craig Vencil is coordinating the Car Shows at the New Mexico State Fair to be held in September.  THe National Street Rod Association is planning a show and meet in August.

Old Business:  Our own V8 Times received a national Honorable Mention in the Newsletter Contest for 2020.  The National Club sent a 45th Anniversary Award to our local club.

New Business:  May’s breakfast gathering will be held Saturday the 8th at 8:30 am at Hello Deli on Jefferson.

The board will meet via Zoom on Tuesday, May 11th at 7pm.

Bruce Miller of the Chevy Club invited our club to participate in a Tour of Northern New Mexico on September 30 - October 2, 2021.  The tour will be based in Taos at the Hotel don Fernando and will include 3 nights and 2 days of driving.  Details will be published in an article.  The tour is being called The Jay Hertz Memorial Tour.  Several of our members showed a keen interest.

Dave Degeer of Broadway Truck Salvage has sold his property and has to sell everything there.  The sale will be at the end of June but he hopes to sell things before then.  He has several of Frank Corey’s cars.  Contact Dave for information.

A refreshment/social break was taken followed by a panel discussion on selling vehicles.  The panel consisted of Joe Abbin, Kathleen McGaughey, Chris Joiner and Will Clements.  Chris talked about his successful experience with selling cars at auction in Arizona and with the local Doty Auction.  Will has bought and sold on EBay and said to be very careful buying from pictures only.  Buyers are responsible for shipping arrangements.  Kathleen has a car listed on Hemmings and said one has to apply to auction there.  They determine the reserve and hold a 14 day auction which costs the seller $100 while the buyer pays 5%.  There is a larger site called “Bring a Trailer” which holds 7 day auctions and is 2 to 3 times the size of Hemmings.  It was also mentioned that few cars sell on Craigslist anymore.  Craigslist is being slowly replaced by FaceBook Marketplace.  Thanks to our panel members for sharing their experiences with us.

Minutes of the V8 Club Board Meeting - May 13, 2021

The meeting was held on Zoom with Joe Abbin, Vern Willan , George Abernathy, Larry Bost and Beth Jackson in attendance.  Joe had trouble with his connection but was present for most of the meeting.

First topic was that of National Club Membership.  It is a requirement of the National Ford V8 Club that regional members must also be members of the National Club.  At present there are 12 of our 34 listed members that have not joined the National Club.  Beth will compose an email to those members informing them of the requirement with attached registration forms.  There is a membership that costs only $5 a year.  It was suggested that the club purchase that membership for some members, however, without firm guidelines, that could cause more problems.  We can revisit this option after we see which members do not join the National Club.

We waived dues for the year 2021, however we still have numerous members who didn’t pay their 2020 dues.  Treasurer George will compose an email to those members, to be approved by the board, asking them to please pay their dues.

Next topic was that of deciding a meeting place for the June meeting.  While the Joiner Museum was an excellent venue for our May meeting, it is in Rio Rancho and quite a drive for many members.  Available choices for the June meeting are the Joiner Museum, Joe Abbin’s shop and the Military Museum.  It was decided to use Joe’s shop this month while continuing to look for a more central location.  Several churches were mentioned as possible sites so board members need to gather information about any venue of which they are aware.

The Zoom portion of our live meeting in May was problematic and the members trying to attend in that fashion were not able to hear or see enough to make it worthwhile.  Without better equipment that will not be an option at future in-person meetings.

Joe announced that possible meeting topics for the June meeting are the Clements discussing judging of cars, a speaker on the Civil War in New Mexico, the anniversary of the 1941 Ford or a movie night.  After discussion, it was decided to approach the Civil War historian and the Clements family to see who might be available to give the June program. Joe will follow up on that.

The Avezedos are planning to hold their annual Fourth of July picnic.  Joe will discuss with Larry if he has additional information on Henry Ford for a future program.

Joe mentioned that two retirement communities are holding car shows on Father’s Day weekend and we will ask members at the June meeting if any are interested in attending.  La Palmilla on Golf Course Rd is holding theirs on Saturday, June 19th and La Vida Llena on Montgomery and Juan Tabo is holding theirs on Sunday, June 20th. Both involve a mini car show and food.

The June breakfast will be held on Saturday, June 12th, 8:30 am at Hello Deli on Jefferson.

Joe mentioned that Fastinos on Juan Tabo is again holding their cruise-ins on Wednesdays from 5 to 7pm.  Vern mentioned that the Owl Cafe does a Saturday morning Cars and Coffee.

    The meeting was adjourned.

FORD TAKES TO THE RAILS

One of the many places Ford industrial engines are doing a man-sized job is, believe it or not, on the railroads. Shown above is an inspection car for executives’ use, built by the Kalamazoo Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, powered by the Rouge 239 cubic inch V-8 engine. This unit uses a standard three speed and reverse Ford transmission, coupled to a special reverse transmission to provide for equal speed forward or backward. The final drive is by triple roller chain from either side of the reverse transmission to the rear axle. The car uses standard Ford ignition and lighting systems and has an all-steel body with shatterproof glass all around. The operator’s seat is forward with two passenger seats alongside.  Behind these are four seats facing forward and four facing to the rear, providing a total seating space for ten inspectors in addition to the driver, plus a baggage trunk at the rear.

Dyno Test of Hendershot 293 cu.in. Flathead Ford on 4/24/21

Joe Abbin

Summary

This engine produced 356 Hp at 5300 rpm and is the most powerful flathead tested to date by Roadrunner. The engine produced 372 ft-lbs. of torque at 4400 rpm corrected to standard sea level conditions. With 2.14 overdrive supercharger pulleys the engine produced about 8 psi boost. The engine ran on 110-octane racing gas during test. The engine characteristics are listed below.

Engine Definition

Block assembly

The long block assembly was built by the owner and consisted of the following:

a) 3.313” bore, Ross forged pistons with .187” domes.

b) 4.25” stroke Scat crank, Scat rods, partial girdle center main cap supports.

c) 1.6” stainless intake and exhaust valves, block ported, and relieved (.100) by owner.

d) Melling M15 High volume oil pump.

e) Elgin cam with .406” lobe lift and 272 degrees duration at .05”, 110 degrees intake centerline, and 112 degrees separation. Single Isky 185G valve springs (95 lbs on seat). Johnson hollow lifters.

Heads

Modified MotorCity aluminum heads with an 82 cc head volume. Estimated compression ratio for this engine was 7.5.

Intake

Roadrunner manifold and Weiand 142 blower with (2.8/6.0) pulleys. A Quick Fuel 650 cfm carburetor was used. This carburetor had #70 primary jets and #73 secondary jets. Power valve was blocked. K&N air cleaner was used. This combo resulted in a very rich (10:1-11:1air-fuel ratio) mixture favored by supercharged engines. Fuel was VP 110 octane race gas.

Exhaust

Free flowing center-dump dyno headers and large truck mufflers were used during most of testing. Peak power was obtained with owner built “zoomies” and was worth about 6 HP. Center exhaust baffles in the block.

Ignition

Top mount Vertex magneto with locked advance. NGK 7 plugs, gapped at .022”. Advance was varied during test with peak power obtained with 19-20 degrees total.

Water pumps

8BA water pumps used during test. A single electric water pump will be used for racing.

Thermostats

None.

 Discussion

The engine was subjected to six documented dyno “pulls” after initial tuning and check for proper function of all components. The best tune-up was an estimated carryover from previous track tests.

The peak for this engine was still increasing at the 5300 rpm max test rpm which was conservatively chosen to protect the engine, with the only downside is that the full capability of the engine may not have been measured. The limited test time precluded any further investigation.

A problem was the extreme electromagnetic radiation from the magneto which caused the dyno computer to shut off each time the engine started. This was remedied by shielding the ignition wires, the magneto, and the computer data lines with aluminum foil.

During one test, the engine dropped almost 100 HP and the magneto was found to have been retarded to about 10 degrees total when the retaining clamp loosened from testing vibration and inadequate tightening. Retarding the timing is a common strategy in traction control systems and this test demonstrated how effective this can be in reducing power!

Overall, the engine performed very well and represents the most powerful flathead tested by Roadrunner. This was a race engine destined for bracket drag racing in a 1948 Anglia. The cam in this engine would not be suitable for street use. Street-able flatheads had produced up to 350 HP in the past.  For more detailed engine/dyno info contact Joe Abbin.

                                                 JOKES OF THE MONTH

Sign at a restaurant:  Remember what the valet who parked your car ‘looks like’ because we do not have valet parking!

We just had a guy come into our auto parts store asking if we sold longer dipsticks, becuase his doesn’t reach his oil anymore.

I’m bored.  I think I’ll go to the mall, find a great parking spot and sit in my car with the reverse lights on.

Sometimes someone unexpected comes into your life outta nowhere, makes your heart race and changes you forever…. We call these people cops.
