 May 6th, 2025 Meeting

Will Clements and Joe Abbin will present the ins and out of Ford flathead 3-speed transmissions. Will is going to explain how the gears mesh and how the shifting works. There will be samples of good and bad transmission parts on display. Find out what to look for inside a used transmission and learn where to find literature to help you fix one yourself.

Tumbleweed Early Ford V-8 Club

                      Picnic

When: Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025, 11am-2pm.

Where: Village of Corrales Park (next to gymnasium), 500 Jones Rd in Corrales, next to the swimming pool

Yay, we’re having a picnic! We will be celebrating our Tumbleweed Group’s 50th birthday, the 62nd birthday of the Early Ford V-8 Club, the 123rd anniversary of the Ford Motor Company, the 73rd anniversary of the flatheads demise (bummer) and the City of Albuquerque’s 320th birthday! All dates are approximate.

The festivities begin at 11 am at the Village of Corrales Park, next to the Gymnasium. We’ll line up all those flatheads and celebrate each other’s cars. Then we’ll have sandwiches, share some goodies and tie everything together with birthday cake. Water and chips will also be provided, courtesy of the club! Wow, a free lunch (donations accepted)! Feel free to bring a side dish, a salad or anything else you’d like to share with the Ford party animals. Volunteers to help and clean up are appreciated. Let’s put on the biggest display of flatheads since 1953! Bring your friends!

We will have our popular 50-50 raffle with some nice prizes as well as the cash! Please feel free to donate items for the raffle.

Contact Amy Joiner at 505-382-8724 or amy2001tweety@hotmail.com to RSVP and for details.

May Birthday

2025 May President’s Message - Joe Abbin

In April we had George Abernathy give us a talk on a long list of opioids including Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a popular and legal narcotic used by legitimate healthcare givers like George. At the same time, it is illegal but cheap and available on the street causing large scale misery and death. Fentanyl and other addictive opioids are a blessing when used properly but a societal nightmare otherwise. Thanks for the info George!

The May meeting will be held at our regular spot, the North Domingo Baca Multi-generational Center one block north of Wyoming and Paseo Del Norte. Will Clements and I will give an introduction to the design and servicing of early Ford V-8 transmissions. We will describe but won’t be covering overdrive or automatic units.

Also, the club birthday party will be celebrated with a picnic and show and shine on Memorial Day as described elsewhere in this newsletter. Wow! The club is 50 years old! See you there!

Joe Abbin

Jokes of the Month

My wife accused me the other day of being too immature.  I told her there were no girls allowed in my fort.

Someone stole my mood ring yesterday.  I still don’t know how I feel about that.

Why does a chicken coop only have two doors?  Because if it had four doors, it would be a chicken sedan.

These two Companion-Butterick patterns are from the February, 1937, issue of Woman’s Home Companion. They were designed to flatter the figure of “the large woman”.  Patterns were designed so that two very different-looking dresses could be made from the same pattern. By 1937, dresses were still long and slender, but the hemline was gradually receding. The Great Depression was not yet over, fabric was cheap, and most women sewed clothing  for the entire family. These particular patterns were 45 cents each by mail order; postage to mail them was 1.5 cents.

“Auto Tidbits from Various Sources”                 by Joe Abbin

·       The cost of motor vehicle insurance jumped 14% for the 12 months preceding October 2024. Vehicle repair costs jumped 7.3 % over the same period. Both outpaced general inflation.

·       The 2024 US average new auto transaction price was $48,117. Tariffs have the potential to substantially increase this number. Parts and assemblies from Canada and Mexico could be a big part of this because we use so many in our auto manufacture.

·       Demand for electric only vehicles is stalling while hybrids sales are on the rise. Unfortunately all of these vehicles utilize a lot of imported electronics potentially subject to tariffs. Ford will be least affected because they have more US content.

·       The US is getting older but drivers are getting younger. There are more drivers under the age of 25 today than two decades ago. This favors used car sales and keeping vehicles on the road longer.

·       Self-driving consumer-owned vehicles are a long way off, but all new vehicles are incorporating more “driving aids” such as automatic emergency braking systems and rearview cameras.
