Our annual gift exchange will take place during the Christmas Party. If you wish to participate, bring a wrapped gift labeled male or female, and you will go home with a lovely gift. Please make the gift something you would like to receive and keep the cost under $20. We hope to have a great turnout and another spectacular Christmas Party.
President’s Message for December 2023 Chris Joiner
The holidays are here! It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone by again. We have had some great times this year, and hopefully we will have more in 2024. I would like to thank you for letting me be your president for two years. I have really enjoyed it. See you all at the Christmas party. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Minutes of the November 7th Meeting
The meeting was called to order by President Chris. There were 21 members present and no guests. Treasurer Amy reported we are on target with our budget. She also reported that in the past three months, we’ve only paid for the PO box, insurance, and reimbursed the Jacksons for newsletter expenses and the website. Chris offered birthday and anniversary greetings. Thanks to Jeff and Beth for our delicious refreshments. George gave a report on the drive we took on 10/14, which was supposed to be to Chimayo. We only made it to Los Alamos before his car died and had to be hauled home. However, the day was not a complete loss because we were able to see the solar eclipse in Jemez on the way that morning. The Club breakfast in November will be Saturday November 11th at Grandma’s K&I Diner at 8:30am. Afterwards, we will be going to the Wheels Museum. There will be a board meeting with old and new officers scheduled for December 5th, 7pm Joe’s Shop. There will be no December meeting, however the Christmas party will be held on Saturday, December 9th at the Sunrise Veterinary Clinic warehouse building at 1pm. Joe reported that the Good Guys Event on November 17-18 in Scottsdale will also have a swap meet. Joyce announced several upcoming events, including some Veteran’s Day car shows. Chris read the nominations for officers and directors. No additional nominations were made, and the slate was voted to be accepted. You will find the officers listed elsewhere in this newsletter. Refreshments and the Raffle were enjoyed. We had a lot of raffle donations so thank you to everyone for all the donations. The program consisted of Larry Azevedo telling us about his time this year at the Montana 500 Endurance Run. Some of it was mind-boggling (very old car driving a lot of miles), but it was a very interesting presentation.

TECH TIPS
Axle Nuts
TO TORQUE OR NOT TO TORQUE
By Claude Sipe and Wayne Duprez
Article credited to Long Island Early Ford V08 Club Region 21
Has anyone asked you, “How tight should an axle nut on an Early Ford V-8 be?“ Your response should be, “Are you asking about the front axle or the rear axle, because these two nuts do an entirely different job.“
Let’s talk about the job of the front axle nut first. The job of this nut is to “preload“ the front axle bearing and to prevent the wheel from coming off the axle. When properly adjusted the wheel will rotate freely, without any drag on the bearing and without any free play or wobble of the wheel. The proper tightening precedure is as follows:
Front Axle Nut
Raise the wheel off the ground, remove the dust cover and cotter pin. While rotating the wheel slowly by hand, tighten the nut slowly until a slight drag is detected in the wheel’s rotation. When a slight drag is detected, loosen the nut until you can no longer detect any drag. Check to see if the cotter key can be inserted in the hole in the axle provided for this purpose. If it can then do so. If not then loosen the axle nut further until the 1st slot in the nut lines up with the hole in the axle. Never leave the nut tightened to the point where a slight drag is felt when rotating the wheel. When properly adjusted the wheel should rotate freely by hand and there should not be any movement at the bearing when you attempt to rock the wheel by hand by grasping the top and bottom of the tire.
Now let’s talk about the rear axle nut. The job of this nut is to “seize“ the wheel hub to the axle shaft. The proper tightening procedure is as follows:
Rear Axle Nut
With the wight of the vehicle on the wheel remove the dust cover and the cotter key, chock the vehicle, leave it in gear but release the hand brake. Torque the nut to 125 foot lbs. Check to see if the hole provided in the axle lines up to a slot in the nut, if so insert the cotter pin, if not tighten the nut until the cotter pin can be inserted. It is okay to exceed the torque, in this case by up to 20%. Never loosen the nut to insert the cotter pin. When properly tightened there should not be any movement between the axle shaft and the hub. This nut should always be tight and if the hub is pulled for any reason this nut should be checked again after about 500 miles.
