April 7th Meeting –  Memories of Route 66 & Albuquerque

Alan Carlson will instruct and entertain us with a surprise presentation featuring Route 66 at our April meeting. Alan is a lifelong history buff and resident of Albuquerque. He is a member of Historic Albuquerque, Inc. and the NM Route 66 Association. He writes for the Route 66 New Mexico Magazine and will share his memories of Albuquerque and Route 66 with us. Alan will also brief us on some of the upcoming Route 66 Centennial activities.

Remember Little Beaver Town? The Iceberg Café? Fitzgerald’s Ice Cream? The Alvarado Hotel? No? We don’t know what Alan will be presenting, but only one way to find out! Join us at our Tuesday, April 7th meeting at the North Domingo Baca Multi-Generational Center.

Please bring items for the raffle and your show and tell items.

2026 March President’s Message – Jeff Jackson

Joe Abbin sent me a short video that tries in a humorous manner to explain the psychological tie between old cars and people that keep one (or more).   The article posits that there is a strong tie with things that someone was exposed to at an early age that carries through life.   That tie is stronger when there is a positive feeling stemming from that exposure.   The author has a strong opinion that some people just enjoy keeping older cars running, especially now in our throw away/easily disposable material world.  For me, it is clear that 1960's muscle cars are stuck in my mind, high school buddies racing on back roads etc.   I can see younger folks gravitating to cars that they desired when they were in high school.   Alas, our desire to keep our older cars functional is probably driven by a combination of these factors--- returning to old pleasant memories plus the desire to keep old things working properly.

Relative to our club speaker this month we have a surprise.  Eddie Corbin is a little under the weather and begged off this month but will speak later this year about spark plugs.   Joe said he could do a talk on spark plugs but he only has 12 to show, one being a very rare alien plug made in Roswell, New Mexico.  We decided against that and are bringing in Alan Carlson who was a Ford parts guy at Rich Ford, is a member of several Route 66 historical groups, and is a contributing author for the Route 66 New Mexico Magazine.   Obviously, he will talk about historical Route 66.   Good to get different perspectives!

As an added bonus, we also have a person who will invite us to an activity in Santa Rosa this coming August.

CLAYTON, NEW MEXICO

MAY 21, 1937

Dirt from Oklahoma, Kansas, and the Texas Panhandle rolled into New Mexico. Midwest farmlands had been over-farmed, and when the severe drought of th1930s hit, the land literally blew away. Farmers couldn't make the mortgage payments. Banks foreclosed on their lands, leaving many families homeless; some were suffocated by the dust. Many left, becoming the "Okies" along highways, including Route 66, in whatever vehicle they could get to run. These were older models, purchased cheaply, and would carry family and whatever personal belongings that could be loaded or tied on. They left the farms and headed west, looking for a home and work. In 1937, the road through Tijeras Canyon was paved, making Route 66 a popular route to California, "The Promised Land".
