President’s Message for October 2021 Joe Abbin
In September we joined other clubs on September 12 at the state fair. We only had four cars but we had a great spot and two of our cars were the top State Fair Chairman’s Picks. Chris and Amy Joiner’s great 1935 pickup was the top pick and my 1950 Mercury was runner-up. Most of us had breakfast burritos from a vendor near the horse arena on the north end of Main Street. Yum!!!
Pictures from that event are elsewhere in this newsletter.
We will meet this month on October 5 at 7:00 pm at my shop at 9800 Acoma Rd SE, two blocks South and West of Central and Eubank. FYI, my building is right across the street from Bombs Away Brewing which has great craft brews and sandwiches for a pre-meeting dinner. Parking is well-lit. Masks will be required.
The meeting subject will be the first installment of Antique Auto Detailing, with emphasis on exterior washing, polishing, and waxing, etc. We will have some live panelists to demonstrate and answer your questions. They will restore the paint on my 1950 Mercury in just ten minutes! Just kidding, but I can dream.
There are lots of online videos on detailing techniques and products. An example to wet your interest can be found at: https://www.glare.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwwNWKBhDAARIsAJ8Hkhdr7cb7Be-7ScJcYuj2s71yjuwtVY3bj43vJX-ZqGZB-oFUcNOun6kaAt8mEALw_wcB
Start at 11 minutes to skip intro.
As always suggestions for future speakers, meeting places and activities are welcome.
Minutes of the V8 Club Meeting – September 7, 2021
Secretary, Beth Jackson
President Joe Abbin called the meeting to order. Eleven members were present and two guests, Steve Schulthies and Tim Lynch. Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged. Everyone present agreed that the new location was nice and more centrally located. Want ads were circulated for updates. Members noted that some of the safest cities in New Mexico are Corrales, Los Ranchos and Rio Rancho even though Albuquerque is very low on the list. Joe is going to be starting on the “crime” lecture circuit soon.
George gave the treasurer’s report. We gained two new members and $12 from last month’s raffle. This month’s raffle has 2 models, a bolo tie, Ford hat and a pin striping kit. Tickets will be sold at the break.
Steve, who is working on Jay Hertz’s collection of cars, said if anyone wants to visit the garage for a last look, they need to do it in the next few months. Some cars are already gone and more will be sold or donated soon. Several of his smaller collections are already gone and all the toy cars were donated to the Presbyterian Rust Hospital where they have been set up in a display called “Jay’s Garage”. It was decided to try to do a garage tour to Jay’s shop in November.
Jeff thanked Joe for holding the club together during the past two years when activities have been either non existent or difficult. Jeff also noted he will be getting his scrap metal (some flathead parts) together for anyone to come buy at scrap yard prices before it ends up at the scrap yard.
Refreshments were enjoyed and then Joe showed an interesting video on ’36 Fords. Max noted that a ’41 Ford convertible sold for $35,000 on Hemmings last week and a ’40 sold for $55,000.

1940s ON ROUTE 66
Central Avenue in Albuquerque was a busy place in the 1940s. Looking west toward the Kimo Theater, you see four lanes of moving traffic, including buses, and two lanes of parked cars along the curbs. The sidewalks are full of shoppers, and some cars would be tourists just passing through. Albuquerque was a popular stopover for travelers, and Central Avenue was the only street that ran completely through town from east to west and still is.
In the 1940s, it was important to be well-dressed when you got to your destination. Families traveled with nice dresses, suits, hats, shoes, stockings and possibly a fur wrap or overcoat. Luggage was designed to carry such items so that they arrived in wearable condition; hat and shoe cases were a definite need. Going shopping or out to eat in shorts, slacks or T-shirts was a definite no-no. Vacation destination here we come.
