2026 November President’s Message – Jeff Jackson

I know one thing. You don't want the newsletter editor to be your wife. It is just too easy for her to bug you constantly to write a president's letter!

Last month I talked a little about first cars, or in my case first dune buggy and its modifications. I bet that would be a good topic for a round table discussion at one of our meetings. Who still owns their first car, or maybe what car did you own that you would love to have back? I know one car I regret selling, it was a 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile. I had purchased the car against my dad's better judgement. I owned it for about 6 years. Beth drove it to work in Los Angeles when we were first married. She said it was easy to drive on LA freeways because 'she could touch the gas pedal and scooch into any open space'. Alas, newlyweds couldn't really afford that gas bill.

This month we elect officers for 2027. I hope you have been thinking about potential candidates. We will open the floor for nominations at the meeting. Before I end this note I want to thank this year’s officers. Joe has done a wonderful job of finding interesting speakers. Note - the November talk will be given by Larry Azevedo with the subject being Henry Ford. Liz has kept up the minutes at each meeting and accepts edits if needed. Amy is always on top of our finances and budget situation. The directors this year have been great suggesting speakers and keeping the directors’ meeting pleasant and on topic. Again, a special thank you to Joe, Liz and Amy for all your help.

Car Shows

• 🎃Join us for Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 31, from 2 to 4 PM in the Grace Church Parking Lot! We will have candy, games, and fun for the whole family! This event is FREE and open to the public. All are welcome to participate 🧡 Bring your family and invite friends!

Interested in hosting a trunk or donating candy? Contact heather@gracechurchabq.org for details on how you can get involved

• This website, ABQmom.com, lists the Trunk or Treat events by week with links to each event. Too many to list here!

New Business

• The Holiday Party will be held at the Abernathy’s banquet room.

o Cost is $5 /person.

o Reservations will begin in November

o Try and bring a good assortment of sides and desserts; let Jackie know what you plan on bringing so we don’t wind up with 15 cakes and no sides.

• Breakfast - instead of a restaurant, the club has chosen to attend Cars & Coffee at Grace Church in October. The event benefits a charity that provides re-pairs/cars for single mothers in need. This is a non-sectarian event. There are various food offerings. Grace Church is at 6901 San Antonio Dr NE suite B, Al-buquerque, NM 87109. The link on their webpage to the Cars & Coffee is not working, as of this writing, or I would’ve added it. Sorry.

• Endowing CNM scholarship for the automotive arts was discussed, possibly to purchase a starter tool set that is required for the program. Liz found the contact information for Joe to talk to his contact at CNM to arrange a tour and work out the details. Joyce Clements suggested having the scholarship candidates submit a reference along with their entry to help determine merit.

• Officer elections will be held at the November meeting.

October 2026 meeting events

Lisa Parham and Robin Schrittrer from HUB insurance gave a presentation on antique auto insurance that focused on Hagerty’s Insurance; many members have policies with Hagerty. Lisa explained “stacking” uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage over multiple vehicles. The laws (and coverage) are in the process of being revised in NM, so don’t ignore those notices from your insurance to sign/initial your coverage elections. If you are confused (I sure am!), the best thing to do is to contact your agent and make sure that you have the appropriate coverage for your cars. Not too much and not too little. Lisa said that about 1 in 4 New Mexico drivers is uninsured or underinsured, and that cost is about half the premium of a policy. Yep, I checked my policy and was horrified to find out that was right on the mark.

Lisa and Robin passed out copies of the Hagerty Driver’s Club Magazine, reusable totes, and contributed some nice swag (jumper/tool kit, trunk organizer) to the 50/50 raffle. They also passed out cards and offered to help with car insurance questions. HUB also handles home, life and more (HUB is an insurance broker).

Show and Tell

Jerry Page brought in the clutch pedal that he is working on with Don Gutierrez to modify to work correctly in his 1929 hot rod Cabriolet. Jerry is a machinist and Don is a welder. We have a great depth of knowledge and talent here at Tumbleweed that is ready and able to assist members with their flatheads’ quirks and problems.

Meeting adjourned at approximately 8:40 pm.

Keep Your Flathead V-8 Running Strong

A Ford flathead V8 rewards attentive care. Its block-routed exhaust, dual-pump cooling system, vintage valvetrain, and limited oil filtration make a few maintenance habits especially important.

Keep It Cool

Because exhaust passages run through the block, heat control is critical. Keep the water jackets clear of rust, sand, and scale; backflush the system regularly and clean the lower cavities whenever the pumps or heads are removed.

• Use 160°F or 180°F thermostats to regulate coolant flow.

• Keep the generator belt snug, not overtightened, to protect water-pump and generator bearings.

Protect the Valvetrain

Original soft valve seats may benefit from a lead substitute or upper-cylinder lubricant when running unleaded fuel; hardened seats are the durable rebuild solution. A stock, low-spring-pressure cam generally does not require high-zinc oil, but highlift cams or heavier springs should use a suitable high-ZDDP oil or additive.

Change Oil Often

Most flatheads use bypass filtration, and some have no filter. For an unfiltered engine, change the oil every 1,500–2,000 miles. Conventional 10W-30 or 15W-40 suits typical vintage clearances; very thin oils can worsen leaks at rope seals and cork gaskets.

Mind the Distributor

On 1949–1953 8BA engines, the LoadaMatic distributor depends on the stock carburetor’s vacuum signal. Mismatched parts can eliminate timing advance, reducing performance and increasing heat. Check points, with a typical gap of .014–.016 inch, and dwell regularly.

Store It Dry

Before long storage, fog the cylinders, remove stale ethanol fuel, and protect the cooling system from freezing. Moisture can stick valves, rust narrow water jackets, and contribute to cracked castings.

Jokes of the Month

A man crashed his car and hit a woman. When the police responded, he tells the officer that it wasn't his fault. "She was talking on her phone and drinking a glass of wine!" The officer responds, "Sir, she can do whatever she wants while sitting in her own living room."

Sad news: Please join me in remembering YET ANOTHER great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and traumatic complications from repeated pokes to the belly. He was 71. Dough Boy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children John Dough, Jane Dough and Dill Dough, plus they had one in the oven. Service will be held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

Law on Route 66, cont.

Bud Rice and his wife, Flossie, built and operated a gas station, garage, grocery store, post office, and wrecker service on Route 66, between the Rio Puerco and Grants. He sold bus tickets, was the local State Motor Vehicle Agent, and Justice of the Peace. Bud was notified by the Highway Patrol (State Police) whenever there was a wreck, or a car was pulled to the side of the highway with vehicle problems. He towed the vehicle to his property and locked it into his impound lot. When the owner came to rescue his car and/or belongings, there was a “gate-opening fee” charged. For a price, Bud offered to fix the car. He also was guilty of damaging a part in order to replace it from his stock. Once a traveler complained about the price Bud charged for putting a new fan belt on his car. Bud took out his pocket knife and cut the new belt off. The driver complained again and asked, "What do I do now?" Bud told him he should move his car across the street unless he wanted to pay storage charges to his garage. The motorist pushed his car across the street and arranged for a friend to bring him a new belt, which he installed himself the next day. Before he left though, he had to pay Bud for parking his car overnight, since Bud also owned the property across the street. Bud set up speed traps and charged exorbitant fines for those caught in them. If you didn’t like the way Bud treated you, you could take your gripes to Justice of the Peace Rice.

Albuquerque wrecker services complained loudly about Bud getting first chance at all wrecks along the route. Then Bud passed his own law stating that all wrecks east of the Rio Puerco belonged to Albuquerque towing services, while all west of the Rio belonged to Bud; any wreck on the bridge belonged to first on the scene. He claimed to be "The Law West of Rio Puerco" and used this position to aid his business dealings.

Flossie ran the general store and was the major supplier of materials for the bootleggers in the area. She gave local kids penny candy in exchange for any empty bottles they brought in. These she sold to the bootleggers, along with tons of sugar and corks.

Bud made many enemies with his business tactics over the years. He was shot and killed in 1967, by a person, still unknown. Many people were accused, including travelers, motorists and his wife. Flossie ran the business for a while, then closed the doors. His building can still be seen in Budville on old Route 66.

Bud’s 1948 Chevy Wrecker Rio Puerco Bridge

There were other speed traps along Route 66, largely set by small communities. Bud’s was the most famous, but a lesser known one was on the old Route 66 route through Sants Fe, but still existed in the 1960s, was Romeroville, east of Santa Fe; here the policeman was named Romero, as was the local Justice of the Peace. Also on the old Route 66, in the 1950s, Bernalillo’s law enforcer was a young man in a 1949 Ford, frequently evaded by faster cars.

With the building of the freeway system, small towns were bypassed, thus eliminating this source of revenue for the local residents. – Joyce
